My wife and I visited Chicago for the first time and spent 5 days that the Old Chicago Inn.
We drove into town (from Vancouver Canada) and were given a parking pass when we first checked in. The area has a lot of parking spots on what seem like safe neighborhood streets. We had to park two blocks away but used our car a number of times and always found a spot in the same block each time.
We took a small room at the Inn, looking for value first, and were very happy with the size of the room and the comfort of the bed. Washrooms for our room were shared with about 3-4 other rooms and were right down the hall. They could use a bit of sprucing up, but were clean and never did you have to wait your turn. They were just fine.
The innkeepers were friendly and knowledgeable and made you feel at home and welcome. There are some common areas (the top floor is nice) and a kitchen for you to use. They also supply a $10 per person voucher for their restaurant a few doors down, but we never tried it.
We liked the neighborhood very much as a base to explore the rest of the City. The El train is right there and we like to walk around also and this area has lots to see. It is a gay neighborhood on one side and that was great. We went drinking in the many bars there a few times and the crowd was friendly.
In fact, Chicago is pretentious free, friendly, and a nice place. Lots of concerts to check out. Look forward to visiting again.
