For our mom's weekend away, this was a fun, hip and conveniently located getaway. This would have been a 4 star rating across the board, but for the very noisy noisy rooms. At first I was on the 6th floor, and the street noise (cars going by, alarms going off, people talking/yelling) was unbearable. I usually sleep through a LOT, but I couldn't even begin due to the noise. I imagine the flimsy windows have something to do with it. They moved me up to "the penthouse" when I asked for 1) ear plugs (sorry, don't have them) and 2) a room change (perhaps, in the morning). The penthouse was similarly thin-windowed, but being that much further, the street noise was more subdued. So my tip: visit the James, but bring earplugs for sleeping. You never know if you will get a room near the street level (even on the sixth floor it was terrible!!!) or if you will be on "the wedding party floor". BTW the lobby bar closes earlier than other bars, like around the corner. Strange. I must mention the excellent concierge services - they had great access to restaurant info., friendly non-pretentious, but professional service. The cabs and hotel car were super easy to obtain, and it was fun to be able to walk to a lot of terrific places. The beds and pillows were also incredibly comfortable. Be aware the typical room does not have a tub (just a very nice stand up shower). My stand up shower in the penthouse had a broken attachment, but forgot to report it to the staff.
