“Fantastic central location, lovely boutique hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2009

Me and my boyfriend stayed at the James May 2008 whilst visiting Chicago and found the hotel very pleasant. I am a bif fan of modern boutique hotels and this was just that. It was trendy, not too big, not too small and in a great location.

The rooms are modern, a good size and clean. The only downside is theres not much of a view but you are in a big city so not many picturesque views around here!

We used the gym a couple of times which was well equipped and there was also great internet access in the lobby. The staff were also very helpful.

We ate in the David Burkes steakhouse one night and the food was fantastic, however on the pricey side so maybe for a special occasion. We then went to J bar which was very good music and got packed fairly quickly. I would also recommend drinks at the top of the hancock tower. Fantastic views of Chicago. We also went up the sears tower in the daylight which is worth a visit. One thing you must do whilst in Chicago is go to a Cubs baseball game. We had such a great time!

I would definetely stay at the James hotel again. Great overall stay.

What a great place to kick-off an exciting and adventurous evening in the beautiful city of Chicago. This hotel has a great location placing it within walking distance of some of the finest bars, restaurants, and departments stores the city has to offer, some of which are right inside the hotel. My check-in was speedy, and the entire staff was friendly and most helpful in answering all of my questions. The contemporary room has amazing atmosphere and boasts all of the high-end amenities a person could ask for including flat screen televisions, stereo system, and the most comfortable bed I think I have ever slept in. I highly recommend the James for an impeccable weekend getaway or an extended vacation.

We recently stayed at The James in Chicago. It's a lovely hotel and the rooms are really nice. We had a suite which included a lounge area with flat screen plus a flat screen telly by the bed. The bathrooms are lovely and the Kiehl's toiletries are a lovely touch.

We really liked this hotel. The service was great, they have umbrellas you can borrow for those rainy, windy days. It's a great spot to shop, go for dinner, see the sights.

We would recommend this hotel. It's not a cheap hotel but is great.

Just around the block are two great restaurants, The Grand Luxe Cafe (beware, the portions here are huge!) and Heaven on Seven (amazing, particularly if you love proper soul food).

We were very pleased with our stay at the James. It served our needs perfectly. We came to Chicago to see the Cubs play but wanted to visit downtown as well.
The location of the hotel was excellent. Within walking distances to bars, shopping and lots of fun. Also a trader Joes located across the street to pick up some healthy snacks and refreshments.
The hotel decor was a bit trendy than we are use to but it was very comfortable. The hotel staff could not be better. From check in to check out (5 days), they were most helpful. Even lent me an umbrella when I forgot mine upstairs. Room service was fast and reasonably priced.
Will definitely stay there again!

Myself, my four sisters and my mother stayed here in October 2008 for 5 memorable nights in Chicago. The main purpose of our trip was for shopping and also to visit family. We arrived at the hotel very tired and weary after a long flight from Ireland and from that moment until we left we were treated extremely well.

The hotel itself is located a block from the famous Magnificant Mile (Michigan Avenue), so for those looking to shop til they drop the location could not be better. Check-in was a breeze and very efficient. When we arrived at our rooms, it almost took our breath away. We were greeted by the subtle tones of relaxing music from the stereo playing in our room, and lovely subtle lighting. The decor of the room was understated and stylish, without being over the top. There was bathrobes and slippers and complimentary treats left out for us from the David Burke restaurant which is located in the hotel. In the bathroom the complimentary toiletries were by Kiehl's which was an extra nice touch. Let me just say, that we slept like babies for the duration of our stay, such was the comfort of the beds and the room itself.

Unfortunately, we did not get the opportunity to eat in the signature restaurant or bar during our stay, but we did drink in the lobby bar which was very pleasant and we did have some bar snacks which were delicious, not the usual greasy fodder.

For anybody on their first trip to the Windy City, this hotel for me ticked all the right boxes. Great location, excellent service, beautifully appointed rooms, and well worth the price we paid.
I want to say a special thank you to the guys on the concierge desk who looked after us so well and went the extra mile for us.

Some highlights of our trip were the following;

1. Gurnee Mills, Shopping Mall - this is a shopping mall upstate
which is a paradise for those who want to get designer
shopping at rock bottom prices

2. The Grand Luxe Cafe, Michigan Ave - Great value for money
and extensive menu for either lunch or dinner.

3. Navy Pier - it's a Chicago staple, but what more can I say, you
have to see it at least once.

4. The Museum of Science & Industry - if you're going to do
something different please go and visit this museum, it is
absolutely fantastic and well worth a visit.

All in all, we had a wonderful visit to Chicago and even though the city itself made it wonderful I would say that the James made it extra special for us.

  • Liked — Location, service and sheer class of the hotel
  • Disliked — Limited options on bar menu

Room:
I stayed in the 16thz floor. 2 double bed room.
The room has a decent size. Equipment is state of the art. The Furniture are stylish.
Room Size was very nice. I could have left my big suitcase opened throughout the stay (which rarely happens in most hotels ;))

42" LCD Screen
Complimentary WiFi in the room
The bed and pillows are of extrodinary quality which provided an excellent deep sleep to me.

Location
Located quite central. Shopping streets are in reach of 5 minutes by feet.
Midway Airport is in reach by cab within 30 minutes (~30 USD).

Service
- Spa and Fitness exists - though I did not use.
- Restuarant (not used)
- Business Center
- Very friendly and helpful staff. (even printed our boarding passes at the reception)

I do travel frquently, and do recommend this hotel for a business stay, as also for an overnight with friends going shopping, partying whatever in the city center of Chicago.

Pricing was very moderate for teh standard being provided at a downtown hotel.

  • Liked — uptodate and stylish furtniture; service - where friendly and helpful
  • Disliked — not a pretty view out of the window - though a city hotel ;)
