“Cirque du Soleil on your plate”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

Amazing! Every dish is a discovery in art and in taste. With every plate came with a new discovery and a new twist. Totally unexpected and totally delicious. I took the reserve wine pearing and it was very good and I was even surprise by their generousity! The service is absolutly spotless, maybe just a bit too distant. The tables are set far appart ensurring total intimity. Clearly, one of the top restaurant in the world, I never experienced this level of complexity and creation anywhere else.

“Perhaps the most important restaurant in the world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

There is probably nothing left to say about Chef Grant Achatz or Alinea that has not already been written by a professional reviewer. To say that the service is perfect is an understatement. To say that the food is beautiful is again an understatement. The food is more beautifully prepared and presented than anything I was served in a Zen Ryokan in Japan, but it tastes better. The food is more creative, more novel, more surprising, than the most unusual molecular gastronomy restaurant I have visited, but it tastes better. No detail is left to chance, or to default. The tables are too beautiful to hide under a tablecloth. The food is too beautiful to serve on a traditional plate. The restaurant is not inexpensive, but I would honestly have to call it superb value.

“Worth the experience and the bucks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2013

It was not easy to get a table at this restaurant and booking in advance is a must. I must say from design and creativity, they are top notch. They were 16 course tasting menu. They were all designed well and interesting, really pretty and unexpected. The dessert was the most exciting things, splash of chocolate, helium-filled apple taffy balloon, liquid nitrogen, was really happening at the table. Love it. Was a great experience to have. Time well spent. Worth the bucks.

“Only in America fast food 3 starred michelin style”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2013

We had planned this trip for 12 months, flying in from the UK to have hopefully the culinary delights of a life time. We arrived and escorted past our first course hung on bottles Why.? Pre drinks of champagne at the table, followed by our sixteen course tasting menu, great food followed with a couple of exceptions the duck was so over seasoned/ salted that we left most, the raspberry shake was very average and the veal cheeks, I asked if they were rose veal this three starred restaurant didn't even know what rose veal was or is? We had eaten this tasting menu in a new michelin record time of 2.5hours , what was the rush as the waiter started to vacuum the carpet by a table nearby oh to turn he table again, 700 dollars for two you couldn't surely expect the table all night. We have eaten at many great restaurants and never felt so rushed as we did at Alinea, we are beginning to question the michelin starred credentials of how these are bestowed and retained, we have probably eaten, at as many michelin starred restaurants as the inspectors and are unsure of how they are attributing the accolade. If someone can explain how great chefs like JEFF BAKER in York UK are ignored year after year while other shall we say has beens keep this converted award is beyond my comprehension. Please advise michelin I'm intrigued.

“Ultimate foodie experience, very expensive but memorable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

Alinea was rated one of the greatest restaurants in the world, one of 3? in North America, for its inventive microgastronomy. Four of us finally got a table through its website; with its expert wine tastings, it was at least $400 per person. We were served 14 courses of the most interesting, creative, and delicious food I have ever seen. My favorite was the dessert at the end, from a helium-filled apple taffy balloon (you inhale the helium and speak in that Donald Duck voice), to the liquid-nitrogen chocolate 8 inch orb that is cracked on a plastic tablecloth on your table and decorated like finger-paint by the chefs. The chocolate ball reveals a pinata of treats. Obviously this is meant to be a once-in-a-lifetime type place but I definitely think it was "worth it" if you can afford it. The service was great and very friendly, full of articulate, well dressed young people. Thanks Alinea for putting Chicago on the world stage of food. People fly in from all over to try this place.
