This was one of those bucket-list things. I saw it on TV and heard about it from friends. I just HAD to go and try it. Then they changed their reservation system to a ticket thing in August. Okay, I logged on DAILY and refreshed incessantly. Finally, success! Table for 4 on a very special weekend in Chicago.
Everything from start to finish was a surprise and a delight! The food was very good, very finely crafted from luxurious ingredients. The waitstaff was intuitive and AMAZINGLY coordinated to the slightest nonverbal cues. Their explanations of both the food and the wine (seriously, why NOT get the wine?) were pinpoint and perfect. We took tons of photos and had a very lovely, leisurely dinner with our friends. There was a flow of logic from one dish to the next, and the pairings were great. The chef himself even graciously comes out to "build" each tables dessert at the proper moment. In addition, the coffee was superlative.
It made no sense to me at all that the wine would not be a part of the "ticket". And you have to just let go of that and how much hassle securing the reservation was. Jackets are required for men, and the whole dinner lasted 4 unrushed hours.
I guarantee you will never have a meal as unique, original and special as this. For me, it was more the overall experience than the individual foods and wines. It might not be for everyone, but certainly if you have thought about it and are prepared, you will enjoy it.
