We spent a lot of time looking for a deal in a nice place four our 50th birthday weekend in Chicago. Although there were no online reviews up yet for the Thompson, due to the opening, we took a chance on it. We're glad we did. The service was impeccable. Everyone was very kind, and friendly. The lobby is very nicely decorated, hip but tasteful all the same. It was a very comfortable place to sit and talk. The room was comfortable, and tastefully decorated in a modern way. It was very clean, and well put together. I have slept in more comfortable beds before, but they were good enough. A couple of my pillows were a bit hard, but the others were better so it wasn't an issue. Yes, as stated in some other reviews on here, paper cups in the bathroom are tacky, but I'm sure it's because they don't have a dish washer yet due to the fact that the restaurant is not open yet. Our toilet paper holder broke while we were there, and no one every fixed it. It just sat there on the tank the entire time we were there. I thought that was strange. The cleaning ladies did not replace our lotion and body wash as well on one occasion...strange also.
Since it was our 50th the hotel sent up some cupcakes which was very nice. Another point of service that I appreciated was that when I sent my shoes for shining (complementary), they were returned damaged by the shoe shiner. I asked them to fix them, which they attempted twice before finally sending them out to a professional, who did a great job fixing the first guy's mistake. I appreciated that.
This hotel is in a great neighborhood, just one block from Michigan Avenue and a couple miles down from the museums and all the great sights of Chicago. There are many restaurants in the neighborhood, however avoid Dublin's Bar as it just wasn't worth it.
All in all this was a great hotel experience, and will only get better in my opinion. They are on the right track.
You will want to be in one of the higher floors, and you will also want a lake facing room.
