“Hyatt Place is really welcome in Hyde Park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

We spent the recent U Chicago Family weekend at the new Hyatt Place in Hyde Park. We had eagerly anticipated the opening finally of a hotel in the university neighborhood and our stay exceeded our expectations. We were warmly welcomed by the young staff that has clearly been well trained. As other reviewers have said the physical plant is of course brand new, the décor is clean and modern, and the standard rooms are spacious with the added bonus of a separate living area. The L-shaped sectional convertible couch and coffee table provide the feel and functionality of a suite at a regular room rate. I have to agree that the water pressure in the shower was extremely weak and we were only on the second floor. I imagine it’s a conservation effort on the part of the hotel; laudable in theory but not so great when you’re actually huddled under the showerhead. The free breakfast is ample, tasty, and good value added (though we had to experience Valois next door on Sunday morning). Hotel parking is typically pricey but truly not necessary ON WEEKENDS (emphasis added because street parking is at a huge premium on weekdays when classes are in session); we moved our rental car all over the neighborhood at different times over the weekend and were always able to find street parking pretty quickly. In all, this a most welcome addition to Hyde Park and we will no doubt be back many times in the future.

Room and bathroom were surprising nice, but the amenities r poor. No robe, no safe,no lotion, no shower mat. some additional amenities are available but the list is kept at the front desk, and the list is not even complete. No in room guide to nabe, or a simple map. Fitness room is small but clean. Bkfst is okOK but if u r low carb or have celiac, forget it. There r eggs, but they r coated with cheese, paired with ham and bread, so you cannot just have plain eggs for breakfast.
Still I rooting for the place and the staff is young, energetic and helpful.

Thank you Hyatt for opening in Hyde Park. The hotel is conveniently situated a few blocks from the main campus. Décor is modern and rooms are very comfortable especially the beds. Service is excellent and the hotel is spotless. The hotel is informal but friendly and the coffee shop in reception is a win when you are on the go. Only two niggles: the water pressure is low but this may have something to do with it being a new build. Cabs are also erratic. The doorman made every effort to assist but this is more of a Hyde Park problem as cabs are scarce. The hotel will need to address this as I waited 30 minutes for a cab. An excellent option for visitors to uChicago without the journey into the city.

Room Tip: Check the upgrade option when you book online and for specials. I got a suite upgrade for the same p...

We stayed here for a recent visit to the U. Chicago Campus with my son. It is walking distance from the undergrad campus, which is very convenient. We were leaving the next afternoon. At the time of check-in, the front desk told us that if we gave them a time the cab was needed, it would be ordered for the next day. It was not - I got blank stares from the front desk, as the woman paged back and said it hadn't been done. (The manager later said that it had been ordered, but there was no check mark that I saw next to my name.) Several cab companies were called, and one finally came 30 minutes after we were supposed to leave for the airport. He wasn't even sure if we were really his fare, since the address he was given wasn't accurate for the hotel.
So be aware that cabs do not usually come to that area of town, and that the hotel is lax in terms of getting cabs there on time - and might even be giving the wrong address! Cabs do not know where this new hotel is.
Also be aware that the shower water pressure - at least on the 6th floor - is dismal. You might as well take a sponge bath by the sink.

Room Tip: Ask for one with good water pressure in the shower.

Decor is very IKEA-like...sleek & clean! Since this hotel had only been open a short time when we visited it was evident that a few details were lacking. Should look into changing the AC vent...it blows right on you when trying to sleep. Also for this price should have a few more luxury perks like lotions, shower gels, coffee, tea, etc. Breakfast was hot & good. Staff was very helpful about area restaurants, taxis & other local attractions. Don't miss seeing The Robie House by Frank Lloyd Wright on the Univ. Of Chicago campus. We would definitely stay here again.

We stayed one night - I wish we had the opportunity to stay longer at this lovely new hotel! I had never stayed at a Hyatt Place hotel before and wasn't sure what to expect from the brand, but I was impressed! Our spotlessly clean king room was spacious with a large L-shaped sofa that was really comfortable. The bathrooms are quite large and linens are top-notch. Breakfast options are typical for this type of hotel (but fresh and delicious). I appreciated the spacious layout of the food serving area - no bumping into people while waiting for toast! We did not partake of the grill offerings in the lobby bar area but I noted they are available 24x7 which is unique. My only critique is the cable tv service - waiting for the TV guide or changing channels can take 15 seconds+ and a couple times I thought either the TV or remote was broken.

Note: there is no free parking, despite what it may say on some third-party travel reservation sites. Parking service is valet only, at $32/day.

Stayed here during recent trip to Chicago for business meeting and campus tour with my daughter. About a 15 minute walk to campus and 15 minute cab ride downtown. Nice decor. Super friendly and helpful staff. Top notch all around. If my daughter attends UChicago, i will definitely stay here again.
