“Delightful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2011

How can a sausage shop and be delightful? When you visit Gene's, you'll understand. Bustling place on a Friday afternoon. The lower floor is a fantastic deli and the wares are multicultural but predominantly german/bavarian like Westphalian and black forest ham, smoked pork, potato sausage, head cheese, german cheeses, liver sausage and on and on. Can ask for a sample if you're not sure about what you're buying. Staff very informative.
Top floor is a roof patio with tables and umbrellas. You can order large pretzels, sausage and several other foods at the order counter, get a drink (beer, soda, etc) and grab a seat while they cook your food for you on the outdoor grill. They'll call your number when your food is ready. Not a real big place and sometimes there may be a wait in line but it's worth it. We were there on a really warm day and were lucky enough to get under an umbrella for shade.
Can't bring food you've bought at the deli to the roof area (in case you thought a picnic would be nice).
Good time and great walk around Lincoln Square.

“I still miss Meyer's, but this is a good replacement!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2011

I have family in the area, so have seen this area change quite dramatically in the last 20 years or so. I used to love going to Meyer's deli as it reminded me of my childhood, and was very sad when it closed a few years ago. However, Gene's is an appealing replacement that at least captures some of the flavor of the previous deli (and kudos to the owners for keeping the old Meyer's sign in the shop!). Their deli selection is great. I popped in two days ago to pick up some pastries and was very pleased with my purchase. I didn't have time to run to one of the other German bakeries in the area, but they must get their pastries from one of them. The selection and flavors were traditional and authentic, and the prices very reasonable. I would certainly come back for baked goods, although the fresh pretzels were a disappointment.

“They have a newer location in Lincoln Square that is better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2011

This store seems to have anything I might need for last minute entertaining (or just to avoid making dinner from scratch on weeknights). This is a great addition to the list of culinary highlights in Lincoln Square (4750 N Lincoln Ave).

Contrary to Richie's review, there are plenty of options for non-sausage eaters. The deli case has prepared salads, potato pancakes, blintzes (I think) and the second floor has a wide variety of pasta and soup options.

I was pleasantly surprised by the range of products and the lower-than-expected prices. The friendly staff stayed open long past the handwritten closing time on the door, but that's probably because people kept streaming in. I will enjoy spending more time researching all their goodies!

“Primarily for groceries, but you can get awesome deli food here as well”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2011

While the majority of the Gene's is used as a grocery store, DON'T pass up the deli counter or you will be sorry you did. For a couple of bucks you can get a great lunch or snack made of quality meats and ingredients. Last time we were there we got the leberkäse (paprika kind) and it was fantastic! If you don't know what it is, leberkäse is a loaf made of different meats (sometimes containing onions, mushrooms, etc) sliced thick and served warm on a roll. Be sure to try it because it is delicious.

You can also find samples of the different sausages they offer at the butcher counter and last time we were there they were doing wine sampling. It's a really fun and cool place to check out when in Lincoln Square.
