“Lovely artisanal restaurant with excellent service and outstanding food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

The restaurant is in what appears to be a large townhouse. Our server, Harmony, was fabulous and greatly improved our enjoyment of the experience. The appetizers (mixed antipasto plate) were outstanding. My entree, a seasonal risotto, was beautifully presented but a little dry. One of my fellow diners shared a steak dish with me -- again the presentation was beautiful but the meat was not as flavorful or tender as one might wish. I would happily return (I would ask for Harmony to be our server), but I would order the osso buco or another slow cooked dish that is a house specialty. I love this kind of restaurant because it clearly reflects a particular person's sensibility and approach to dining, and thus is not another cookie cutter expense account restaurant.

“We enjoyed the food, service, cocktails, level of noise, decor and lighting, but especially the food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013 via mobile

We celebrated an anniversary in August that had to be rescheduled to October! We are so happy to have stayed with this restaurant since it was our first time. The Italian cuisine was delicious from appetizer to dessert! We will return and ask for Sam to be our server again!

“D&J love Merlo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013

This is by far our favorite Italian restaurant in Chicago. Chef Silvia features the cuisine of the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, the most refined food in a country of exquisite cusine. Pastas are all made in house and many of the ingredients of her specialities are imported from Italy or are the best from other country sources. Occasionally, Chef Silvia will also feature a dish of historic or other regional note as a weekend special. Those specials are truly remarkable. The atmosphere is warm and quiet. The service is attentive but not overbearing and the waiters are quite knowledgeable. David, the bartendar, knows how to make many a good mixed drink. I've lived in Italy and everytime I enter the restaurant, the smell transports me back that is how authentic it is. Pricey but in line with other fine dining restaurants in Chicago.

“Excellent Restaurant”

Beautiful and warm space where delicious food is served. Loved that the portions are not large. Also very pleased by the vegetarian offerings on the menu. Very friendly staff.

“hidden jem of Chicago”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013

My husband and I went to Chicago to celebrate our 25th anniversary, wanted to find a special restaurant...and we found it! It takes a lot to impress us, because we are in the restaurant industry in NY. It was a dining experience from the minute we walked in the door, it was very inviting. The food was outstanding, as well as the presentation and service.
We met the owner/chef, we started talking to her in Italian, next thing you know we were hugging like we were old friends from Italy (loved it). If anyone is going or planning to go to Chicago, try Merlo on Maple you will not be disappointed.
