My expectations were shaped by the overwhelmingly positive reviews the restaurant has received and unfortunately, I cannot say that my experience matched that of others. Having eaten at top steak houses in the past, Tango Sur is simply not on par based upon the following factors:
1) Service: I came with a large group that had reservations for 9:00 p.m. on a Friday. Despite the reservation, we were not seated until 9:40. A great steak house would not allow this to happen. Chili's would not allow this to happen.
Also, the server was in a hurry to take orders and was not really approachable about the menu. In contrast, good steak houses usually employ servers who are solicitous and knowledgeable about the menu and different cuts of meat, taking time to explain the different offerings and specialties.
2) Atmosphere: The space is very cramped, loud to the point that conversation at normal levels is almost impossible, and dark to the point that it is difficult to read the menu. Also, the bathroom (unisex) did not feature a toilet that flushed. If you have items on your menu that are priced over $20, this is not acceptable.
3) Food: Except for the chimmichurri (which is delicious), the food was really not very impressive. I split the sampler ($44) with a friend and I can say that nothing really stood out and the small size of the portions did not make it a good value. In particular, the short ribs did not have very much meat on them, and what meat I could manage to get off the bone turned out to be very chewy. Chain barbecue restaurants have done better. I also tried some of my friend's filet which was better, but still nothing special, more like what you can get from a good grocery store.
Overall, these factors all combined for a less than stellar experience for me. When you eat at a top flight steakhouse, the service is impeccable, the atmosphere matches the prices and the meat melts in your mouth. Sadly, Tango Sur did not deliver on any of these.
I might be inclined to try it again on a non-weekend night as it is possible that they just cannot handle the crowds that take over the sidewalks in front, but after last night, I can confidently say you would be better off getting a $20 butt steak at any of the Lettuce Entertain You places.
