Tucked into a rather unassuming looking storefront and buffered up against an alley on Hubbard, Firecakes really is an exceptional find for people looking to nab a quick, yet delicious treat when visiting the Windy City.
After my wife thankfully squeezed my tiny car into the only available spot in front of the shop, we headed into what can only be describe as a storefront that'd do Willy Wonka proud. In spite of the premium on space, there are a selection of doughnuts enough to entice even the most health conscious.
Taking our time to choose, the staff was patient, kind and more than happy to accommodate any number of questions we had. A chocolate Long John covered in hazelnut, goat cheese covered in nuts, a buttermilk old fashion and a maple glazed pineapple and bacon are just four out of the array of pastries available are just a selection of what we opted to take home.
After savoring each of the four, our local Deerfield's just doesn't feel like it'll pass muster anymore. At first glance, Firecakes specialization may appear to limit them. On the contrary, it only has appeared to make them extremely good at crafting some of the finest, most sumptuous doughnuts I've ever had.
Homer Simpson would be proud.
