“Excellent food with imagination”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

First time visit. Sat outside which was fine if a little chilly. Good service and attentive staff. Limited menu which I usually think is a good sign and in this case it was. The food was excellent with good presentation. The dishes were unusual and imaginative - different combinations and tastes. The crispy rice was outstanding and the apple crumble beautifully light. Clearly Paul Virant knows what he is doing! Definitely recommended

“Outstanding experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

Our anniversary dinner at Perennial was memorable in every way. The appetizer of spaghetti squash with mariana was excellent - tender and flavorful. Pickled vegetables accompanied the squash in a separate dish - an excellent contrast with their tartness and crunch. The highlight was the fettuccine with roasted delicata squash, broccoli, garlic, parmesan, and chili flakes - without question, the finest pasta dish I have ever had. It had a delightfully sweet, delicate flavor with a subtle spiciness because of the very small chili flakes. Our server, Michael, gave us the finest service we can remember - informative, sociable, and helpful without being overbearing. A delightful experience - highly recommended.

“Great staff, nice food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

I was here on business and ate at the bar. The staff was incredibly nice and helped me pick out the best items on the menu. The food was fabulous, I enjoyed the scallops and the chocolate cake for dessert the most.

“Fabulous drinks. Fresh food could use some zip”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

Ive dined here now 3 times. Their bartender is great-- fun cocktails in a beautiful space. It's especially nice in the summer, outside. The food is fresh, high quality but I'm never blown away. It's definitely finer dining but I just feel like a little more creativity could come from the kitchen. I do appreciate the abundance of local fresh vegetables. Go for dinks and a snack for sure. It's beautiful.

“I guess my expectations were too high...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

We have sooo many fabulous restaurants in Chicago. It is rare to be disappointed. We had a birthday in our family and were excited to make reservations for Perennial Virant. It is a prime location near Lincoln Park Zoo, bordering Old Town, at the intersection of Clark and Lincoln.
The interior confused me - very contemporary table setting, mason jars for lighting and mason jars around the top border of the kitchen. And the music so loud. We were near the window, with a view of the garbage and blue recycling bins, as well as people filling them while we dined.
The cheese platter to share was very good, although it came at the same time as our salads. The salads - local greens and local tomatoes and melons were very good. The entrees where all very good - fettucini, walleye, beef. The menu changes daily based on local availability, so that is special in itself that the chef comes up with new creations. But most accompanients had pickling. Too much pickling.
We have so many restaurants to head back to in Chicago, this isn't on the list. Very good entrees, but the window view, the pickling, the ambience just didn't make for a typical fantastic Chicago dining experience. We did end at Black Dog Gelato for a treat (Damen and Belmont).
