“A High Caliber Hotel BUT . . .”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2007

The Amalfi is first class from beginning to end but let me down. The Amalfi offers:
1) Nice, clean, well appointed rooms
2) Quiet rooms
3) Continental breakfast-bar in the lobby of each floor.
4) Terrific Mattresses turn-down service
5) Robes, slippers, extra blanket, iron, ironing board
6) Nightly open-bar reception (great drinks)
7) Attentive staff, except . . .

. . there was an intermittent electrical buzzing in the air unit over the entry to our room. I requested that it be repaired after the first night. Nothing changed and I was disturbed for a second night. There is no point in offering amenities if you haven’t first taken care of the first duty of any hotel; to provide your guests with a good nights sleep. And yet so many hotels don't seem to get this most basic idea!

Stayed April 19-22. Staff was great, location even better. Two girls late 20s and it was perfect. You were within walking distance of everything (Michigan Ave, Navy Pier, Division St) and a quick cab got us over to Wicker Park. Bed was comfortable and room was clean. The continental breakfast on each floor was great as you could walk over in your pajamas, grab something, and go right back to bed. Perfect when you are out all night and don't want to sleep your day away.

Have stayed many times at his hotel and it continues to excel in every way including customer service which is my big thing. The lobby is small but the rooms spacious and the decor to my tastes. Very comfortable and the staff is always eager to help with any reservations or recommendations. Valet guys are great but if leaving for dinner make sure to call for your car ahead of time. They do get busy. The Amalfatinis at the free cocktail reception each night are excellent and the breakfast served each morning always a treat. Location is pretty central to everything and around the corner from House of Blues for any shows that may be in town. Often dine across the street at Harry Carry's which is always great. Couldn't ask for more. Will continue to stay here every time I am in town (which is quite often).

  • Liked — The excellent service
  • Disliked — Lobby could be more grand.

We spent a week at the Amalfi whilst on holiday in Chicago. The room was comfortable, although a little dark! The room housed a big TV (good), DVD/CD (bad quality), Aveda Products (nice touch), and magazines (again, nice touch). The bed was huge and comfy. The breakfast buffet was a big plus if you are on a budget. The drinks reception served quality drinks and antipesto but was a strange experience (small dark room/no windows/lots of people). If you stay at the Amalfi make sure that you get out of the hotel and experience all the great bars that Chicago has to offer - do not just go to the Amalfi drinks reception!! The staff were very efficient and welcoming and we had no compaints with the service offered. If you do stay, make sure that you go for a steak at Harry Carey's opposite the Amalfi and Vong's Thai Kitchen (VTK) behind the Amalfi. Both are great restaurants and worth investigating.

The Amalfi was a splurge for us for a weekend getaway. We were very excited about the hotel after reading about it online. Maybe our expectations were too high, but we were a little disappointed with our stay. We had mixed experiences w/ the "experience technicians" (i.e. front desk staff). The woman who checked us in was almost done w/ her training but was completely clueless about something basic I asked about. Later, though, our request for toothpaste was happily fulfilled and someone else was extremely helpful with directions via public transporation to a restaurant. I expected to be greeted upon coming and going, but this happened only about half the time (most consistently the concierge staff would greet us).

The highly-touted manager's reception took place in a windowless conference room, which definitely detracted from the experience. That said, the drinks we got both nights were good and the finger food decent. Breakfast on every floor was nice, but the bagels were not good at all. It would've been nice to have a selection of cold cereal.

Sheets were of very high quality. Bed was too soft for my partner but I liked it. The toilet squeaked when you got up (we never bothered to report it). The bathroom was HUGE, which was nice. I liked the yellow towels; my partner did not. We both agreed that the ones we had at home were softer and more luxurious. Curved shower rod was cool. Aveda products nice, and there was a "vanity kit" and mending kit too. We liked that there were robes and slippers (though oddly only one pair).

DVD/CD player played through the TV speakers, so the quality was not good for music. Having a few books and magazines provided was nice.

I really liked the comfy chair w/ ottoman, and there was a sliding table that was convenient.

  • Liked — king-size bed with nice sheets, and huge bathroom
  • Disliked — inconsistent staff

I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights on March 17 & 18th. Due to it being St. Patrick's Day in Chicago, the hotel was very busy. Enjoyed the location, price, breakfast and nice, clean room. However, the "bartender" in the lounge was unwelcoming at best - perhaps the hotel mangement is unaware that this man needs to work away from customers?? It was perhaps understandable on Saturday nite, as the lounge was packed, but he was just as surly on Sunday, when the lounge was almost empty! His attitude was the only negative in an otherwise nice stay.

I was a little intimated by the very hip check in "desk" and the very retro type colors of yellow and orange but once I adjusted to the lobby I absolutely loved my stay. The hotel was very, very clean
and the afternoon Manager reception was quite nice with appetizers and beverages of your choice. I would definately stay at this hotel on return trips. Loved it!!
