“Elegant Hotel for Reasonable Price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2011

The Amalfi Hotel is a great place to stay in the downtown area--good central location and just a few blocks from the Riverwalk area near the Trump Tower. Rooms are tastefully decorated and exceptionally clean. The beds and especially the pillows were wonderful. A complimentary breakfast bar is provided on each floor across from the elevators and the complimentary appetizers and drinks beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the lounge on the sixth floor were a real treat. In addition, all the employees were exceptionally friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again on another Chicago trip.

Very trendy, modern atmosphere with a complimentary cocktail hour and continental breakfast. Staff were friendly. I called the "experience designer" before we arrived to ask about what to do in Chicago, and she was extremely helpful. Located in the middle of downtown. I would definitely go back!

This hotel is very nice, a good value and worth a look whether you are in Chicago for business or pleasure. Amalfi is located in the RiverNorth area which is just north of downtown. This area has many restaurants and bars/pubs. It is close to many activities if you came for fun. Walking distance to State street and magnificent mile (shopping) downtown and a little longer walk to art institute and grant park/ millennium park. Bed was very comfortable. Staff very attentive to our requests. The hotel has free continental breakfast which was decent. It also has a free happy hour every day with appetizers, which was also decent (no rot gut booze). Hotel has free wifi which is a plus since most places
charge $15 or so per day. It also provides USAToday during the week. The decor is modern. Rooms are clean and a good size with all the typical amenities, desk, charging station, minibar and safe. A nice touch is they have a couple of books fi you want to read and several music cds if want music. There is a work out room with up to date
equipment. Very happy with this hotel and would stay here again without hesitation.

Room Tip: Booked last minute and got better rate at booking.com so check the sites for best rate.

Things started off great because we arrived early in the morning and were looking to have them watch our luggage until check-in time and they let us check in to our room right then and there. We loved the location, close to everything and mere steps from lots of good restaurants. The room and bed were comfortable, very quiet because there was no AC unit whirring away in the wall - it is centralized, but you still have local temperature control, nice. Liked the Aveda bath products. Never checked out the cocktail reception because we stopped by the first night and there was a big lineup and we were too tired to make that much effort. Having breakfast available on each floor was also a great convenience each morning. Staff were very helpful and I'm amazed at how good the room was for the price we got. Very clean and no bugs.

We recently enjoyed 4 nights at the Amalfi Hotel, Chicago, over the Labour Day weekend and cannot find fault with our accommodation. We got an exceptionally good nightly rate deal via Travel Ticker.

The Amalfi Hotel is ideally situated to enjoy Chicago. Excellent location just north of the Chicago River, only a 10 minute walk from the Clark/Lake Blue Line station from O’Hare and about the same from the Red Line. The hotel is within easy walking to the Loop and the Magnificent Mile, and is surrounded by numerous great restaurants and bars. There is also a grocery store just up the street.

Check in was quick. While there was a second floor room available, we decided to have our bags held and wait for a 6th floor room. The Amalfi Hotel is only 6 floors in total as it is at the base of a larger office building, so, if you are looking for amazing views of Chicago, this is not the hotel for you. We did not feel views were important, so the Amalfi Hotel was just fine for us. The hotel is situated slightly off a main street and is very quiet for sleeping. We were never disturbed by other guests.

The Amalfi Hotel is quite chic in design and the lobby has some interesting furniture. The room itself was a nice size and well appointed with a comfy king-sized bed, a flat screen TV, desk and chair and a lounge chair. There was a fully stocked mini bar and a coffee maker. Plenty of drawer space and a nice sized closet. The bathroom was quite large and the Aveda products were very nice. The shower had a double head and we never had issues with water pressure or temperature. There is a blow dryer provided which was really appreciated – one less thing to pack.

The room was spotlessly clean upon arrival and cleaned each day. We appreciated the hotels environmental efforts and endeavoured to use our towels.

A nice bonus was free Wi-Fi. Not sure why some hotels still charge for this feature. We brought along our lap top and had no problems logging in and found the service very good. There is a large safe in the room where we stored the lap top during the day when we were gone. Local and toll free calls were no charge.

The real bonus of staying at the Amalfi Hotel is the breakfast and evening reception. We enjoyed both each day, padding down the hall in the morning for breakfast in our comfy robes and slippers found in the room, and around and down the hall in the evening for cocktails and snack before heading out for dinner. We were informed of both the breakfast and evening reception upon check in, the staff indicating the hours and locations for both. Breakfast hours do change slightly from weekdays to weekend.

Breakfast included coffee, tea, juice, assorted cereals, pastries, English muffins, bagels, toast, fresh fruit, yogurt, jams….. plenty to get us started each day. The evening reception was amazing with specialty cocktails as well as wine, beer and a full bar. The snacks included meats and cheeses, pitas and crostinis, hummus, olives, vegetables, dips…. all nicely presented.

The staff at the Amalfi Hotel were all very nice. Front desk, house keeping and the breakfast/reception staff were all very friendly and accommodating.

The Amalfi Hotel was a great base for visiting Chicago and we will definitely consider a return stay for our next visit.

Stayed at the Amalfi last weekend which we only discovered was Labour Day weekend when we arrived.
Best thing about the hotel is the location, close to the River, transport, Magnificent Mile good restaurants etc.
Hotel is a bit tired, rooms are comfortable and clean enough, we respected their policy of not changing the sheets everyday for environmental reasons, but actually think this is a bit con as saves them time and money and is far less about an environmental issue! Shower pressure is almost non existent and don't expect a hot shower at peak times. We didn't have a view from the fifth floor room, looked out at the Harry Caray restaurant and had an ice machine opposite the door.
We did not find the front office staff as friendly and helpful as some other reviewers, maybe that is more about British reserve. Frequently they looked bored and were just chatting to each other.
What sets this hotel apart are the extras like the breakfasts and evening reception. We only found out evening reception on the last day, so might have been nice to have been told about it when we checked in, how many people read the book of hotel services from cover to cover?
Would stay here again but think the hotel should consider a bit of a renovation programme before it looks shabby rather than chic.

Room Tip: make sure you're not opposite the ice machines

Dear Guest,

Thank you for sharing your experience at our hotel with other travelers. We truly appreciate your feedback. It’s fantastic to hear that you found our location, cocktail hour and breakfast to be convenient.

In regards to your experience with our front office staff, we greatly apologize and we are addressing the situation immediately in order to continue upholding a more positive level of customer service. We are very sorry to hear your water pressure was inconsistent as that is generally not the case. The shower heads more than likely caused the problem and if you could contact us regarding the issue, we would like to further investigate that room’s shower.

Again, thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We would love to welcome you back again.

It didn't matter what time of day or night we headed out the staff always greeted us, going and coming, with a smile. Restaurants they recommended were excellent.
