“LOVED OUR STAY AT THE AMALFI HOTEL”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2011

We recently enjoyed 4 nights at the Amalfi Hotel, Chicago, over the Labour Day weekend and cannot find fault with our accommodation. We got an exceptionally good nightly rate deal via Travel Ticker.

The Amalfi Hotel is ideally situated to enjoy Chicago. Excellent location just north of the Chicago River, only a 10 minute walk from the Clark/Lake Blue Line station from O’Hare and about the same from the Red Line. The hotel is within easy walking to the Loop and the Magnificent Mile, and is surrounded by numerous great restaurants and bars. There is also a grocery store just up the street.

Check in was quick. While there was a second floor room available, we decided to have our bags held and wait for a 6th floor room. The Amalfi Hotel is only 6 floors in total as it is at the base of a larger office building, so, if you are looking for amazing views of Chicago, this is not the hotel for you. We did not feel views were important, so the Amalfi Hotel was just fine for us. The hotel is situated slightly off a main street and is very quiet for sleeping. We were never disturbed by other guests.

The Amalfi Hotel is quite chic in design and the lobby has some interesting furniture. The room itself was a nice size and well appointed with a comfy king-sized bed, a flat screen TV, desk and chair and a lounge chair. There was a fully stocked mini bar and a coffee maker. Plenty of drawer space and a nice sized closet. The bathroom was quite large and the Aveda products were very nice. The shower had a double head and we never had issues with water pressure or temperature. There is a blow dryer provided which was really appreciated – one less thing to pack.

The room was spotlessly clean upon arrival and cleaned each day. We appreciated the hotels environmental efforts and endeavoured to use our towels.

A nice bonus was free Wi-Fi. Not sure why some hotels still charge for this feature. We brought along our lap top and had no problems logging in and found the service very good. There is a large safe in the room where we stored the lap top during the day when we were gone. Local and toll free calls were no charge.

The real bonus of staying at the Amalfi Hotel is the breakfast and evening reception. We enjoyed both each day, padding down the hall in the morning for breakfast in our comfy robes and slippers found in the room, and around and down the hall in the evening for cocktails and snack before heading out for dinner. We were informed of both the breakfast and evening reception upon check in, the staff indicating the hours and locations for both. Breakfast hours do change slightly from weekdays to weekend.

Breakfast included coffee, tea, juice, assorted cereals, pastries, English muffins, bagels, toast, fresh fruit, yogurt, jams….. plenty to get us started each day. The evening reception was amazing with specialty cocktails as well as wine, beer and a full bar. The snacks included meats and cheeses, pitas and crostinis, hummus, olives, vegetables, dips…. all nicely presented.

The staff at the Amalfi Hotel were all very nice. Front desk, house keeping and the breakfast/reception staff were all very friendly and accommodating.

The Amalfi Hotel was a great base for visiting Chicago and we will definitely consider a return stay for our next visit.

Stayed at the Amalfi last weekend which we only discovered was Labour Day weekend when we arrived.
Best thing about the hotel is the location, close to the River, transport, Magnificent Mile good restaurants etc.
Hotel is a bit tired, rooms are comfortable and clean enough, we respected their policy of not changing the sheets everyday for environmental reasons, but actually think this is a bit con as saves them time and money and is far less about an environmental issue! Shower pressure is almost non existent and don't expect a hot shower at peak times. We didn't have a view from the fifth floor room, looked out at the Harry Caray restaurant and had an ice machine opposite the door.
We did not find the front office staff as friendly and helpful as some other reviewers, maybe that is more about British reserve. Frequently they looked bored and were just chatting to each other.
What sets this hotel apart are the extras like the breakfasts and evening reception. We only found out evening reception on the last day, so might have been nice to have been told about it when we checked in, how many people read the book of hotel services from cover to cover?
Would stay here again but think the hotel should consider a bit of a renovation programme before it looks shabby rather than chic.

Room Tip: make sure you're not opposite the ice machines

Dear Guest,

Thank you for sharing your experience at our hotel with other travelers. We truly appreciate your feedback. It’s fantastic to hear that you found our location, cocktail hour and breakfast to be convenient.

In regards to your experience with our front office staff, we greatly apologize and we are addressing the situation immediately in order to continue upholding a more positive level of customer service. We are very sorry to hear your water pressure was inconsistent as that is generally not the case. The shower heads more than likely caused the problem and if you could contact us regarding the issue, we would like to further investigate that room’s shower.

Again, thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We would love to welcome you back again.

Regards,
Melissa Driza

It didn't matter what time of day or night we headed out the staff always greeted us, going and coming, with a smile. Restaurants they recommended were excellent.

Great hotel to explore chicago from. Just blocks from the blue line train that will save you from having to pay for a taxi from O'hare airport, it also is situated 2 blocks from the magnificent mile, 2 blocks from the loop, with plenty of high calibre eateries around the hotel. The best part, and the reason I booked the hotel was the free breakfasts, and the free wifi which most chain hotels do not provide. A very surprising bonus was at 6 o'clock in the evening the hotel has a complementary cocktail hour where they supply all the guest with free drinks, a very nice personal touch, where as a solo traveller, it gives you the chance to meet fellow travelers is you so wish. The room are standard, nothing special, but clean and have everything you need. Highly recommend the place for location, special touches and price.

This trip to Chicago was off to a bad start with me missing my morning flight. I ended up getting here at midnight and didnt check in until 1 am. This is my first time staying at Amalfi, the previous time I stayed at Affinia. The location was great, a few blocks from Magnificent Mile, Subway-Clark/Lake station and other attractions were within walking distance. Check in took a bit of time since I wanted to put incidental deposit on a different card rather than the one I used to pay for room charges, the front desk was quick to accommodate this request and sped me through the check in process. I was exhausted and starved and they gave me menus of nearby restaurants that were still open and deliver to the hotel upon my request, that was very neat. The room (209) was probably the worst room u could get, of course i wasnt expecting a spectacular view since i didnt request and paid for one. The view of the brick wall of the building next door wasnt a problem. However I felt like I was staying in a matchbox because my phone cant even get any reception. The room itself was spacious but outdated, the bed was comfortable and I loved the 2 shower heads. But the room wasnt spotlessly clean since there were strains of hair spotted in the bathroom sink and on the bed. I decided I wasnt going to be a pain over that stuff. Free wi-fi was painfully slow even though I didnt use it much. I wont complain since it's free, but if you're going to offer it to your guests as complimentary, wouldnt it be more useful if the guests can really benefit from it? It's pointless for the hotel to offer it if the guests cant really use it. I woke up late and didnt make it to complimentary breakfast which front desk later informed me that it only last until 9:30 am. I requested privacy so the maid didnt come in and clean the room but they were curteous in leaving me a note that if I wanted the room cleaned they were still available. The next morning I did make it to breakfast and it was great, not a lot of choices but they were enough to get me through the morning. My overall stay with Amalfi was good, there's no such thing as perfect but u can always try. I'd be willing to give Amalfi another try the next time I visit Windy City.

We were pleased with our stay at the Amalfi in Chicago. We booked through Expedia and took a chance based on reviews and all went well. Large room, view of the city, comfortable beds, clean and nice large bathroom. Extras included buffet breakfast on each floor, which was well stocked with cereals, fruit, juice, sticky buns etc. Also, cocktail party each evening at 5:30 pm until 7 ish. Cocktails and appetizers. Staff was great, friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this hotel.

They treated us really well. Friendly service, rooms cleaned very thoroughly each day, free breakfasts and cocktail/apps hours. The location was perfect -- easy access to sightseeing, shopping, food and el lines. If you are celebrating something, let them know in advance. They'll make you feel special.
