“Stay uneventful - Staff "couldn't care less"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2012

Pros -
- Relatively cheaper (for good reason I suppose)
- Most rooms, if not all, have a balcony
- Decent location - though on the outer edge of the loop/downtown area
- Onsite restaurant from breakfast, lunch & dinner. Breakfast not included in room rate though.
- Literally next to the highway - easy to locate

Cons -
- Front Desk staff couldn't care less - had some questions (about non-smoking rooms) during check-in - very nonchalant responses with a shrug
- Had a simple question / comment (about why they don't take payment for valet parking while checking out - instead of saying "you're all set" only to go out to pickup car and they ask you to go back inside to pay for parking and get the ticket stamped) - yes, not a big issue, but VERY simple to fix - when asked about it at the Front Desk - response "we just don't do it" (ABSOLUTELY couldn't care less)
- Literally next to the highway - somewhat noisy - though I should say the balcony sliding doors blocked most of the highway noise reasonably well.
- Noisy hallways with the basketball guys roaming around all night (some event I suppose)
- The front drop-off/pick-up area is a MESS - cars coming in from all directions, blocking the entire area - trying to cram in as many cars (hence the "valet") as possible and then more.

The hotel management seems to care enough about responding to these comments on Tripadvisor. I wish they would just fix the front desk guys' attitude.

Room Tip: Pick higher floors (to be as far away as possible from the highway noise)

We had multiple problems with this hotel. Were not told that you had to use your room card to use elevators so we got stuck in the elevator several times trying to get to our floor. My daughter was riding with some other guests who were using their cards the right away and they were still having problems. A technician was sent to fix this.

There is terrible service at this hotel. You are supposed to have a guaranteed wake up call or your night is free. We used the wake up service and never got the wake up call which made us very late for our meeting the next day; had to talk to the hotel staff several times to get this taken off the bill; manager would not talk to us either of the times we came to speak to her ; she was too busy searching through the phone logs so they didn't have to comp a night; we were told this would be taken off our bill but it was not so they don't honor their own guarantee if the wake up service doesn't work. We had with inconsistent and unhelpful staff. Were told by a staffer that they would a taxi for us the next day. The next morning (when their wake up service did not work and we were very late) we had to go outside ourselves and call one from the taxis parked at the hotel. Thankfully we got lucky and other guests had not grabbed them first.

Also the alarm clock they supplied did not work either day. The second day we got up only via my daughter's cell phone. If you MUST stay here, take your own alarm clock.

As another review stated there is a lot of road noise. They apparently keep a door open and this increases the noise. We could hear road noise on the tenth floor; thankfully we had listened to the other reviewer and did not choose a ground floor.

Would NOT stay here again. Don't--just don't.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay at the Crowne Plaza Chicago Metro. Our apologies on failing to communicate to you that a keycard is required to access floors 3 and above. This feature is enabled on property elevators for our guest’s security. We would love to look into the alarm clock and wake-up call challenge that you experience on your stay with us, if you may kindly contact the hotel directly at (312) 829-5000 and ask to speak with the Manager on Duty.

It is unfortunate that you were left with the unfavorable impression of the hotel as your review indicated. While we understand that your stay was not 100% satisfactory, we would hope that you would give us another chance to make your stay as best as it can be.

My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights. We are priority club members, so perhaps our room was upgraded, but it was lovely. It was on the 15th floor, view, balcony, quiet, free internet, clean, comfortable beds. All the staff were really friendly and helpful with directions, restaurant suggestions etc. It is not right downtown, but we walked or took the 20 Madison bus which stopped close to the hotel. We also took the red line (Wrigley Field), blue line (airport) and other buses (Lincoln park) quite easily. There are lots of Greek restaurants and a good breakfast place (Meli?) nearby, as well as a corner store.

Room Tip: Higher floors have a view

I stayed here while taking the Illinois Bar Exam in February 2012. It was a good hotel, and I don't have any specific complaints. I won't say it wowed me either, though. I paid the discounted rate for bar examinees, so I don't know how good the value is otherwise. I have stayed at other Crowne Plaza hotels, and this one doesn't stand out as significantly better or worse. For where it is, it didn't seem overpriced nor a particularly great deal. Parking is expensive (as it will be at most hotels in or around downtown Chicago), so I decided not to bring a car.

Put up here as a conference I am speaking at is nearby. Street noise, free but too slow Internet, movie that stopped half way through, hallways not air conditioned. Just isn't up to business travel standards.

I went a few years ago, company I went with was not so good, but I am looking forward to going back. The rooms were clean and staff over the top nice. Food was good and I just can't say enough about the hotel manager and the staff, top notch...close to all transportation and easy to get around from here.

We had a beautiful room with a balcony and great views, and noted that the lobby has been modernized from what we saw on the web site before the trip( it now shows the hotel as it is). Service was excellent, room and beds very comfortable. Internet was fast, but went out once. A very courteous man soon came to have a look and fix it. We liked Greek town but did have some long waits for the #20 bus. The stop is very convenient, though - just across the street.

Room Tip: If you like looking at Chicago architecture, get a higher floor. The Willis tower and other interes...
