We stayed at the Ivy Boutique Hotel for 3 nights from May 8-11 2013. It was our first trip to Chicago and was in the middle of a holiday to the States (we are from Australia).
First of all the location is perfect. Right off the Magnificent Mile. We were able to walk everywhere we needed, into the loop, millennium park and all the key sites with ease from the hotel. You couldn't ask for better.
The staff are friendly and from the moment we checked-in were incredibly helpful. I'd like to particularly single out the doorman who's name escapes me (starts with a K I think!). He helped us with great restaurant recommendations, including giving us a voucher to a great pizza place called Pizza Uno (definitely go - amazing!) and also organised an airport car for us on check-out to avoid the small taxi which would have barely taken our luggage. At check-in reservations also gave us a great voucher to eat at the nearby pub while our room was getting ready and we were entertained at the downstairs bar one evening while waiting for a dinner reservation by the friendly bar man explaining the rules of ice hockey to us novice Aussies.
We were fortunate also to be upgraded to a King suite facing the front and if we come back I'll definitely book one of these rooms. Spacious, relaxing and the perfect oasis after a busy day sightseeing. The lounge was perfect to relax in, bed was comfy and the bathroom was a great size - huge shower and spacious bathtub!
We were also lucky our stay coincided with the roof top bar officially opening for the summer season. What a great way to relax in the sun of an evening. Only down fall was the barmaid on the night we went who was unlike the rest of the hotel staff and a bit rude and on herself!
I cannot recommend this hotel enough. I knew nothing about it when I booked and took a gamble and it paid off. It has a great personality, isn't part of a big chain and I'd definitely stay again if we are lucky to go to Chicago again.
Tips for Chicago... definitely do the architectural boat tour, do the gangsters tour (very fun and better than a tourist bus tour), eat at Pizza Uno (or Due), eat at The Purple Pig (on Miracle Mile), do a tour of the Chicago Theatre and see some art!
