Simon's has been around since 1934 in Chicago's Andersonville neighborhood, a former Swedish enclave -- the neon sign outside the tavern is a fish holding a martini -- "pickled herring" (get it?)
This is a dive bar where lovers of dive bars love to hang out. The long, worn mahogany bar was modeled after a steamship. Blue, back-lit portholes glow from the bar's wooden backdrop. The bar is decorated with Viking ships, wooden carvings and a small Viking warrior skewering a bowling pin with what looks like a trident.
Simon's has an ongoing, unadvertised bar contest: if you can spot the five hidden animals in the lodge mural across from the bar, you can drink for free during the entire evening while wearing a Viking's helmet.
This is how a fine drinking establishment should be. And during the winter, there's Glogg.
