This is the more formal (but comfortable and welcoming) dining option at the Neiman-Marcus store on North Michigan Avenue. I've been here many times, and it never fails to provide a wonderful dining experience.
I give it 5 stars for this type of place -- a higher-end dining room with excellent food to please a wide range of tastes. While it might not compete with the finest restaurants in Chicago at dinner (few places do anywhere,) the excellent menu covers a wide range from soups/salads, to burgers and sandwiches, to well-prepared main dish plates. A range of tastes will find good choices. Every meal starts with the signature popovers (no one does them better) and demitasse of broth. There is a full bar and good wine list by the bottle or glass -- on the high side, but appropriate for the quality.
The quality of the food is very good. Everything tastes very fresh, and the composed main dish salads always have interesting combinations. Most recently I had a fish dish with sides, glass of wine, and felt like I was taking very good care of myself.
The place is a real treasure on the busy shopping days that are often found on North Michigan Avenue. The tables are well-spaced, and the service staff is friendly and professional. The dining room is on the top floor of the store with widows that make a pleasant light-filled room. Even when it's full, the room feels social but not noisy -- a nice respite from many places in the area.
I'm not a big dessert eater, but they look great.
This is also a place that might have models walking around for an informal fashion show.
So: especially when your arms are full of bags and slepping your own food to a table seems too daunting, this place revives your spirit and energy.
The only downside: it closes about 4 p.m. -- just when I might be reay to return for teatime.
