“Good Choice for Chicago”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

I liked this hotel. Cool, clean, modern rooms, quiet, yet close to everything. Good food. I would stay here again when visiting Chicago. The only odd thing was no sheet between comforter--was that intended to be intentionally European, or just an oversight? I called housekeeping in the morning, and they promptly added a sheet when they made up the room while were out.

“Mais Oui!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

We stayed at the Sofitel over Thanksgiving (at a considerably reduced rate) and thought it had a lot going for it. Interesting architecture -- stand back on the street and look up at how it tapers into a prism -- decent sized and comfortable room (though hardly luxurious), great location, and a cosmopolitan flare. Be prepared to be "bon joured" and "bon soired" repeatedly at this French-owned property, and to hear many French speaking guests. Here's an idle thought: If you stay at a Best Western or a Marriott or some other American sounding place in Europe you might not be considered an adventurous traveller. Does the same apply to the French who stay at a Sofitel in Chicago?? Anyway, we liked it, at least at the rate we paid. As others have noted, the bar is a lively spot, if expensive (I recall $12 for a martini). We splurged on a room service continental breakfast, which was pricey but excellent. French-pressed coffee (what else?) and delicious -- and plentiful -- croissants, brioches and other rolls. Room service was prompt, all hotel staff we encountered were courteous and professional.

Room Tip: Higher floors will probably give you better views of downtown Chicago. We were on the 17th -- and ma...

“NIce but expected more from a luxury property”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

For 10 years we have stayed downtown the Fri. and Sat. after Thanksgiving. We like trying new hotels so this was our first experience with this property in Chicago. We were really looking forward to our stay since this hotel just made Conde Nast Best in the World 2012 list coming in at number 9 in the midwest. Well it was nice but, top 9 in the midwest? I dont know what critera they used but I did not think it lived up to the rating. The hotel definitely caters to a foreign guest. The lobby was nice but unlike most of the other Chicago hotels sported no holiday decorations. Couches were of a chaise style making sitting awkward at best. We received a corner room. It was much smaller than I expected. The bed was very comfortable and the linen was of very good quality - however there was no top sheet. The room had a Bose radio. The closet was lit and had a safe, padded hangers and robes. We set the thermostat at 65 degrees and the room never cooled to that temp. When the fan ran it had an annoying whistle hum. The window did not open. The view was non descriptive. The tv was placed on the desk in front of the mirror cutting the limited work space in half. It should be hung on the wall in my opinion. The bathroom was large with a huge walk in shower. There was a window in the bathroom which was nice. There was a thermostat in the bathroom but that did not cool down to 65 either. Our kids were in a room with double beds. Their room seemed even smaller than ours and had a tight desk arrangement and no easy chair. We had to call housekeeping twice for extra towels. The first time we called no one ever came. Also called for a top sheet which was needed because the room was so warm - and having to wait 30 minutes for that when you want to go to bed was annoying. I have no complaints with this hotel but was expecting something a bit more exciting. As far as location - if you are doing Michigan Ave it is great. Over the years we have come to enjoy a RIver North Hotel location more because of the proximity to State Street, Michigan Ave and River North restaurants and bars. For me it would come down to the price. At over $300 a night I don't think it is a value. However if you snag it on Hotwire or LMT ($150) it was worth it.

“Great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

We have stayed in a few hotels in Chicago and this is the best by far. It is in a very good position for
good bars and restaurants and a few minutes away from the magnificent mile shops. The staff are excellent, helpful and friendly. The room we had was on the tenth floor and was quiet, very clean and serviced well. The restaurant was good for dinner, very lovely presented food even though we weren't quite agreeable with some of the combinations of flavours in some of the dishes..The hotel bar was a very good lively place to have a cocktail in the evenings and seems to be popular. We will definitely stay here again next year when visiting Chicago.

“3 day weekend in Chicago”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

This modern styled hotel is just a few blocks off Michigan Ave and is in easy walking district of many well known stores. We stayed on the 12th floor in a superior room and had a nice city view. The king bed was comfortable and the room was a good size- not cramped as in some city hotels. There was a good size closet with interior lighting. The bathroom was very large and elegant with Occitane toiletries, which was a treat. The staff was welcoming the entire stay. We did not eat in the hotel, but there is free coffee each morning in the bar, and free croissants if you get there by 7am! They were delicious. We had drinks in the bar, which was tasteful, but the bar tab of $46 for 4 drinks seemed somewhat high. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes within walking distance. We would definitely recommend this hotel to our friends.
