“Great Boutique Hotel in Awesome Area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2014

We found this hotel on one of the discount websites, and we were concerned that it wasn't one of the name brands. As it turns out, we loved the place! Its rooms were beautiful and quaint and unique. The staff was very nice and attentive, and it was definitely not your run-of-the-mill hotel. One thing to consider, is that it is somewhat noisy because of all the city noise. Other reviewers have said the same thing, and it's true. What I did every night was I turned the radio low to static to create a little bit of white noise, and I was fine. The line that came to mind for me that made me smile, was the line from the Blues Brothers when the trains were going past, and Jake (Belushi) asked Elwood (Ackroid) how often the trains went by. Elwood said "So often, you won't even notice.." well, that sort of the applies here, but it was still a beautiful, and eclectic hotel in a great festive fun area of Chicago. I would definitely stay here again.

We stayed 3 nights over St. Patrick's Day weekend. The hotel is within close proximity to a number of restaurants and shops. You can find whatever you need without going very far. Our room was a queen on the 3rd floor facing Belmont with a view of the El (subway). The room was clean and the only complaint we had was that it was so hot we had to leave a window cracked to be comfortable. We weren't sure how the radiators worked and I didn't want to risk breaking either of them (one in the bathroom and one in the room itself). We did hear noisy people in the hallway one night, but that seems to be the norm on weekends in hotels in general. The hotel is old, so you can expect to hear creaks from above when people walk across the floor above. It actually reminded me of a hotel we stayed at in London. Not big by some folks' standards, but adequate by ours. The subway was not as noisy as I expected reading some of the other reviews, more of a subdued drone and it didn't bother either of us. The city sirens at night were louder than the train by far. Having the subway that close is a curse and a blessing, but for us a blessing. We flew to Chicago and took the subway everywhere. Breakfast was the typical hotel continental plus. Hard-boiled eggs, fruit, croissants, bagels, donuts, cereal, coffee and juice, with some Jimmy Dean frozen sausage, egg and biscuit sandwiches that could be reheated in the microwave. We had no complaints about any of it. The mini bar in the room (which we did not use) was well stocked and very reasonably priced. We will definitely stay here again and likely ask if we can have the same room.

Room Tip: If city noise bothers you, stay on the east side of the hotel.

I had a completely awful experience and checked out four hours after I arrived. The door let in light from the hallway and was paper thin, and right across from the elevator. There was someone stomping above me on the ceiling the whole time. Was it a kitchen?? There was an a/c unit installed in the window even though it was February, letting in all noises and freezing air. The only heater was in the bathroom and I couldn't adjust the heat setting. The towels and bath mat were damp and dirty upon arrival. Save your money and go elsewhere. What a nightmare. I've never left a hotel in my life, but this was truly terrible.

We stayed one night for a concert at the Vic Theater, the hotel is conveniently located around the corner in a very walk-able neighborhood. The staff were very friendly and helpful! Brian personally saw to my ridiculous request of a green and brown M&M placed on the nightstand for our arrival (I was joking when I put in the special request, and was delighted to see that they take requests very seriously!). The room was clean, and the honor bar selection was very reasonably priced (as was the add-on bottle of champagne). Our room faced the street (and the much reviewed train station) but in all honesty I sleep with earplugs in and didn't hear a thing (you can obviously hear the trains but the sound is actually kind of soothing in a weird way), the bed was very comfortable also! There were a few signs talking about the renovation but they must be almost finished because I didn't see or hear any obvious construction. We would have stayed another night to make it a weekend trip, but all of the rooms were booked for tonight (error on my part, I had been thinking about extending the trip before we left and waited too long to ask). I would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Wear earplugs to sleep and you won't hear the trains at all if the room faces the street.

We stayed only one night, the Vic Theatre is a block and a half away...which was perfect. Our room wasn't ready at 4:30 on a Saturday, it was about a half an hour wait...the room was nice, new furniture and new carpet...but the remodel, well...it's like your brother or father-in-law, with very little construction experience, had made an attempt...paint splatters and everything new seemed to be installed crooked...one the best parts was the honor bar, great prices and selection. The room faced the alley, the windows let in the breeze and the train came by every few minutes...it wasn't overly loud but it did shake the cabinet in the bathroom. It's an old hotel but in no way dirty or gross...it could be a really nice hotel, you know...if there weren't gaps in the drywall around an outlet cover...and if there were curtains on the windows, we covered one with the bedspread.

We had a great experience from the moment we walked in. The staff was very friendly, the room was comfortable and clean, the all day coffee service was a plus, the continental breakfast was just enough and the location was perfect as it is situated right in middle of many entertainment venues. The hotel is currently being renovated but we did not see any clutter or hear any noise from such. We look forward to staying here again.

Room Tip: The Belmont CTA station is right next to the hotel and even though our room faced the station, surpr...

Stayed one night in newly renovated rooms. Don't expect views, just a nice room reasonably priced in a great part of town. Lots of restaurants and bars in the area Clark's across the street is open 24 hours for eats. And you can't beat ann Sathers !! Staff was very nice, it's an old building but it's very classy looking. Rooms are on the small side but have all the comforts you need. A small fridge an iron hair dryer coffee in the lobby 24 hr an array of snacks available for purchase, flat screens and free wifi. I would stay again and recommend to others
