“Good 3 Night Stay - Outstanding Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

I have not stayed at this hotel prior to its renovation, so I can't give a before and after picture. The after picture, however, is good.

Service is top notch. We arrived at the hotel at 3:30 AM due to a long delayed flight. Hotel had us checked in, moving up to our room, and all toiletries we asked for in-hand within 3-4 minutes of walking in the door.

Had a lakeview room; great view. All the boats were out on the weekend, so had a good amount people watching to look at.

I had some minor issues come up. In-house manager quickly jumped on it and went and resolved it. The only thing that holds me from 5 stars is the gym. It supposedly has not completed its renovation.

This was not a big deal for me as I simply went for some runs in the park right across the street (which was great), but in the winter I would be less inclined to run on the lake.

I would suggest disregarding all reviews prior to July or so of this year. Management clearly invested a lot in training the staff and a lot in the hard-product.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a lake view room. Worth the view of the pier.

We have stayed a number of times at the W Lakeshore, but this was the first time staying there since the new renovation. The hotel is absolutely beautiful! Both the lobby and the rooms are well decorated, comfortable, sleek and trendy! We arrived in Chicago very early ( 8:00 A.M) and were so pleasantly surprised when Sasha at the front desk was kind enough to check us in early. The room was absolutely gorgeous and the decor was done in great taste. We ate breakfast at the restaurant three days and each time, had a different server, all who were terrific. Mac, Phillip, and Alexander were the servers who took care of us, and the reason why I remember their names is because all three were personable, friendly, and professional. The food was delicious and was prepared exactly how we ordered it to be done. The view of the lake, is, of course, magnificent, which only adds to the pleasant stay that we had. We come to Chicago every few months and will absolutely continue to stay at the W Lakeshore. What a great weekend we had and what a classy hotel it is! Terrific job on the improvements and renovation!

Room Tip: All of the rooms are beautiful, but if you want a fabulous view, get a room with a view of the lake...

Even after spurging for a suite I was sorely disappointed. WiFi was not complementary neither was an in room microwave. The frig was small with a noticeable odor. Will definitely stay at the Waldorf or Ritz-Carlton next time.

The three stars are very close to four and I have to stress that W is a good hotel. However… there are a few must fix’, marked here with X, for W Lakeshore to go from good to great.

The entrance is a garage-like corner (X), busy with taxies and Ubers. Instinctively, you start wondering where the gas pump might be... But as soon as you get in to the hotel, the turmoil is quickly forgotten. The ground floor area stretches in grandeur against lakeside, with quite clever lounge areas close to the windows. Check in (and out) is smooth, with lots of helpful staff. Nobody helped me with luggage though and nobody greeted at the door (X). The cocktail bar is close to the check-in is stylish and quiet.

Rooms are probably as newly refurbished as the lobby and reception area and are equally smart. Low ceilings are not felt thanks to a wide mirror united with the flat screen and it is kind of connected to a low sofa under the windows. It looks clever together with the integrated (and comfortable) bed and makes the room feel larger than it probably is. Bathroom has a view and is of the higher end of hotel standards. My room hade a fridge but it was empty (X). Complimentary water upon arrival was warm (X). The fridge worked though, so I could fill it up with my own purchases, which is probably the reason for more and more hotels today decide to ditch mini-bars. People rather buy their own water for 1$ a bottle than wrestle with the mini-bar prices. The corridors and elevator areas felt worn and an even a bit threadbare (X). And since we are in public areas, let’s continue to the Wet deck. Hmm. At the web page you sort of get the impression that this is where urban creative Chicago hang out. Overlooking the lake, and the heavy traffic that separates the beach from the city, this is however more Las Palmas than Palm Beach. The impromptu bar (X) has a poor menu and the “wet deck” is an uninspiring slab of concrete with boring furniture. It goes well with the pool (X) though, that some how managed to escape the restoration too. People might have better luck at the Spa-area, which seam to be in considerably better shape. Hopefully this is just an area that is waiting to be re-done? If not, let's hope they reconsider.

Breakfast and snacking is possible to on the terass, outdoors and has some glamour to it. Daytime. Nighttime there is a immodest rodent problem. Not very nice (X). You are better off in the Skyline bar.

To end on a positive note, W is in comfortable walking distance to Chicago’s shopping-universe and it is of course virtually on the lakeshore. The open ground floor is chic and has a nice bar. The staff is truly helpful! If you get a discount, don’t hesitate.

Room Tip: Lake view obviously.

Stayed there for three nights recently end August. We took the option of an upgrade by paying 75$ a night to a suite on the 32 floor with the lake view. Check was a little delayed due to some system fault. Theres a charge for wifi which i felt was a downer.
The rooms are nice sized and comfortable.

Two months ago, the W went through a serious renovation project. The result appears to be a really nice modern and trendy hotel. The black lights in the hallways are a bit retro, but the upgraded King Lake view room looked really nice. We had to pay extra for the "upgrade" to have a lake view which was nice. I loved the look of the room. The large semi-frosted window separating the bathroom from the rest of the room to allow natural light into the bathroom was pretty cool. The stripper-pole with a light rod attached to it, had an interesting look, but the light rod easily fell out of the vertical pole. Craftsmanship seemed to not be built into the renovation. The next snag, was the leak coming from the ceiling. It dripped into the main telephone, partially shorting it out. We couldn't get a dial tone out of the phone, but it did turn on. We called maintenance from my wife's cell phone and someone came by about an hour later, though the person on the phone said they would send someone "right up". The only other thing somewhat negative I can say is that the bath/shower products (shampoo, conditioner, bubble bath) were all very lemon smelling and didn't appeal to me. I did like the rainfall shower and the design of the white tile with the contrasting black stone tile in the shower area with the glassed in shower.
The king size bed was so incredibly comfortable and the pillows allowed me to fall asleep quickly.
The lobby area was very inviting. The drinks were well made, and the pool table near the bar was a nice touch near the round lounge seat area. This was a trendy scenic hotel off Lake Shore drive in a great neighborhood of Chicago. Despite a few issues in the room, our stay was enjoyable and let us escape a renovation project from home.

Room Tip: Upgrades are available, but for a price. We didn't attempt to get an upgrade after walking into...

Sadly, we were only in Chicago for an overnight business trip so we didn't get much opportunity to explore the hotel and enjoy its amenities. We like what we did see, and will definitely be back for more!

We arrived early and were greeted by a very enthusiastic and friendly desk crew who had us checked into a Spectacular room right away. The lobby was a bit glitzy but comfortable, with some cool artwork. (Granted, that’s subjective. Our cool might be your questionable.) Beaded curtains surrounded several conversation “pods” and, past the desk, the bar and restaurant areas have lots of glass and mirrors reflecting light from the windows facing Lake Shore Drive. There were coffee and cookies to welcome us, along with the helpful concierge who pointed us to a delicious pizza place nearby for a quick lunch, along with directions to the Metro and a couple local destinations.

The room was not large but it was well done: comfortable, functional, clean and sleek, with a spectacular view. The W Signature Bed, as always, was delightfully comfy and we love the Bliss amenities. (Thank you to the desk staff who slipped us some extra lotion!) One of the more unique features is a chaise that extends along two walls, forming an L-shape from the bedside to the window, with a built-in table at the end, beneath a chandelier. This gives you lots of seating, without cluttering the small room. We used it as a luggage rack, a work space, and a place to get a great view of Lake Michigan.

The desk was large and uncluttered – just a telephone and desk lamp – with easily accessible plugs. There were more in the nightstand and easily reachable wall outlets. A large flatscreen was mounted above the desk, so it was unobtrusive and well situated for watching from the bed or chaise. It fit seamlessly with the mirror and artwork along the wall. It’s a very modern design that we absolutely love.

The bathroom was clean and bright but a bit small. A little counter space would be helpful, as would a vanity area separate from the shower/toilet. As in most hotels, ventilation could be better, too. The one sort of odd thing that I've seen people complain about is the window between the bathroom and the rest of the room. Some complain that it’s clear, which ours was not, and that the light from the bathroom shone into the bedroom, which didn't bother us at all. In fact, we generally leave a light on anyway, since it can be disorienting waking in the dark in an unfamiliar place and trying to find a light.

The location is great - on the north side of the Chicago River on Lake Shore Drive. It’s across the street from the lake and a large park with a beach, so it’s nice getting a lake view room. A walking path takes you under the street and continues to the Navy Pier. In the opposite direction, it’s a short walk to Michigan Avenue, and the Red Line is just a few blocks further on. There are plenty of great restaurants, nightlife and landmarks in the vicinity.

We didn't get to stay long enough to enjoy (or even find) the pool or fitness facilities, but we found the rocking chairs on the porch! Since check out was substantially before our flight out, the hotel was kind enough to store our bags (free of charge) while we wrapped up some business. Afterward, we had a few minutes to enjoy the rocking chairs facing Lake Shore Drive. You can’t see much of the lake from that vantage point, but it’s nice to sit outdoors and relax a bit, even if it is facing such a busy street.

All said, we thoroughly enjoyed the W Chicago Lakefront and look forward to a return so we can explore and experience more of the hotel.

Room Tip: Lake view rooms have a spectacular view but overlook Lake Shore Drive. Ask for a higher room for le...
