“nice hotel, great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Friendly front desk, light and airy lobby (as are most embassy suites) and nice big rooms (actually two rooms, living area and bedroom.) It comes with a free cooked to order breakfast and happy hour with free drinks! Great price and great location for the four of us.

Stayed for 3 nights with my wife on Martin Luther King holiday long weekend. There was some sort of boys gymnastics meet in the city so the hotel was full of families and energetic kids playing multiple level hide and seek. Nice pool just off of lobby full of kids. I don't recommend the hotel to anyone who is afraid of heights, the openness of the atrium lobby and glass railings gives a very open feel but feels a little too open the first time walking to your room. Rooms are very nice, living room, hallway with sink, refrigerator, microwave and bathroom, then bedroom with windows on the city. Seems like all rooms would have a decent view but I would imagine the higher the better for a view. There is also a sink in the bedroom which is a nice feature. The service was very good and friendly; all the employees I talked to were very helpful. They do an amazing job serving hundreds of people breakfast all at once and the evening reception is nice. Not really any restaurants around hotel. It looks like a restaurant on the street level is being reworked/reopened. There is a grocery store across the street and many restaurants and Miracle Mile two blocks away. The hotel starts on the fifth floor and sits on top of a movie theater and bowling alley, adding to the family attractiveness. I heard some business men went to the bowling alley to watch the football game. About 3 blocks from Navy Pier. Hotel does not stand out on the outside but is impressive inside.

Room Tip: Higher the better to get away from the lobby and street noise and get a better view. All rooms shou...

My room was on the fifth floor and faced onto N State St - it gets all the street noise. The real problem is the MANY jackhammer drills that start up around 8am. Forget having a meeting in your room and forget trying to work in your room - just walk to the nearby Starbucks to work. Breakfast is in a temporary area between the construction area and construction storage, forget trying to talk at breakfast.

I understand the need to renovate but I do not understand not informing one in advance that there is construction or not explaining the impact of the noise at check in or not making some concession on rate ($159) for the fact that the rooms were unusable for work. This has to be attributable to deceitful local hotel management.

It was crowded with families on the weekend I stayed, but the front desk staff was extremely helpful in relocating me to a quiet floor (and a bigger room). The evening reception hour was fun, and I found the morning breakfasts to be well run. I'd stay at any Embassy Suites again.

Decided to stay here for a family weekend in Chicago. After our stay, we have decided that the Embassy Suites chain is our new favorite. With a family of six, this hotel is one of the few that will allow all of us to sleep in one room. Self-parking was convenient and reasonably priced for being in the middle of the city. Check in was smooth. Rooms are fairly large suites consisting of two double beds and a sleeper sofa. The double beds seemed small, and as most hotel mattresses, were not the most comfortable in the world. There is some street noise from the city as it gets especially loud when emergency vehicles are present. Two sinks in the room is a bonus. There is also a handy mini fridge. Overall, the room was fairly clean, although the bathroom could have used a little bit of a scrubbing. The pool was small and constantly filled with children, but the sauna was a nice luxury. The real selling points of this hotel are the free breakfast and happy hour. Breakfast featured a wide variety of foods. From pastries, to pancakes, to cereal, to omelets there is an option for everyone. The lines for the omelets in the morning really pick up around 8:30, but there is virtually no line around 7:30. The dining area is kept clean and the service staff works diligently to turn over tables quickly. The happy hour provides mediocre snacks, the real benefit being the free full sized drinks. The hotel is not located in the most prominent part of downtown. We opted to take a cab to State Street as it was too cold for us to walk there. We did, however, walk to Navy Pier which is about a mile away. In the summer the walk wouldn't have been a problem, but in the freezing cold it was a bit of a hassle. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Embassy Suites and plan to visit other hotels in this chain in the near future.

We flew to the windy city and stayed in Embassy Suites Hotel Chicago Downtown Lakefront from Jan 6-12, 2013.

Check-in was smooth and fast even though it was quite a busy morning at the hotel. The room itself was quite spacious and clean on check-in. We had a two doubles suite. Only downside is that there is no room safe provided although there is a central safe at the front desk. We were informed only after check-in.

Housekeeping was not exactly commendable and the only day it was really done up properly was the last day before we check-out. Coffee and tea were not topped up on daily basis we had to actually place the container box on the table so the housekeeping staff would pay attention to that. The day before check-out, we came back to the room with a nice standard letter on the table from the management trying to make sure that we were looked after during the stay. Honestly, if that be the case there should be a welcome letter on the day of our arrival too so we truly believe we were going to be looked after, which by the way, it was a hotel standard from any hotels we had put up.

However, we would not take away the credit of the front desk agent Clementine who has been a great help from day one and we love her beautiful smile. Buffet breakfast was standard, nice and a tad boring not that we were picky. But they have great staff at the cook-to-order station and the floor staff were polite and friendly too. That probably made up for what's not.

This hotel's location is pretty convenient to anywhere actually, if you like walking for a bit to check out the area it is even better. We practically walked as far as our legs could take us and we also did a hop on and hop off tour ride with the Chicago Trolley to some of the tourist spots. We walked to Navy Pier twice during the stay and shopping at the pier, and Michigan Avenue which is just a few blocks from the hotel would have compensated for many fun spots that were not open during the winter season. This was an unplanned last minute travel to Chicago so we were not upset with the itinerary.

We took a dip in the hotel's indoor pool the last day before check-out. It was small but nice enough for some laps. The hot spa was too hot but the dry sauna was a great way to wind down end of the day.

Food and beverage was not an issue at all. They practically have different types of restaurants nearby the hotel and one restuarant we went for dinner 3 times during our stay was the Niu Restaurant just around the corner. We would remember the sushi rolls, thumbs up all the way. The restaurant was nicely priced even, we could have gone there everyday but thought we should also try out the Thai restaurant and also the Steak house too.

Overall this stay at the Embassy Suites is average to good, one thing we would not deny was we did get very good night sleep, not sure it was the bed or because we were worn out from the day trip. Plus, the front desk agents have been most friendly.

We might return to this hotel if there is a room safe it would make everything convenient for the hotel guests I believe.

I had the privilege of staying one night at this location, I was impressed by the large and modern accommodations. As this was a business trip I was unable to take advantage of most of the activity's that were offered. The main lobby is beautiful and open. The breakfast buffet with made to order omelets was nice but limited. The location is spot on for vacationers to see the best Chicago has to offer.

Room Tip: AS the location is in the city, higher rooms will offer a more quieter stay.
