“Classic Chicago Hotel A Little Disappointing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2010

Although the location, was fabulous, the hotel itself left a bit to be desired. As a Diamond VIP HH member, we expect better-than-outstanding. This hotel was slightly above average in ameneties and service.

We stayed at the Conrad on a short long weekend trip to Chicago on our travel agents recommendation. The rooms were great, clean, big, modern. Service was also excellent. Nice bar in the lobby and rooftop deck. Excellent fitness room, sparkling clean with very few people using it. Best of all was the location, right in the middle of the Miracle Mile on Michigan Avenue which was great for walking. Took the AIA architectural boat tour, I highly recommend it but you need to book ahead online.

My stay did not start well. I got off the airport shuttle with four (4) bags, while the Bell/Door personnel did nothing. Even the shuttle driver remarked how rude the door staff were (the evening door staff, as it turned out, were much friendlier).

The following is a run-down of the "other-than-goods" for this property:

--Check in was efficient, although there was no acknowledgement of my status and no welcome back.

--The "city view" room was a partially obscured view of an air conditioning complex and other nearby buildings.

--My breakfast vouchers were ignominiously shoved under my door whilst I slept.

--Fitness facilities are adequate, but nothing special. Standard Hiltons have better.

--Breakfast in the bar area was, service wise, pandemonium. A Taiwanese student group tied up the restaurant for private morning functions. However, the food quality was great, as was the coffee.

--There were two rubber bands on the floor, in the hallway of the 15th floor, which convinced me that the housekeeping staff is lackadaisical about their responsibilities.

Now for the "Goods":

--Room size is terrific. Plenty of area to feel comfortable.

--Bathroom. Fantastic. Shower, tub, scale, and separate toilet. Bath amenities were replenished regularly.

--Room amenities! iPod docking station, Bose Sound System, Flat Screen TV, and complimentary internet.

--Eddie the Server in the Lounge! Excellent, personal service.

--French Fries. Some of the best I have had.

All-in-all, the Conrad is a nice, decent hotel. I would stay there again, but I do not think it is in the same class as the Peninsula or the Four Seasons. In fact, the Chicago Conrad is no where near the same class as the Bangkok or Tokyo Conrads--not even close. The Chicago Conrad lacks an Executive Lounge, and the majority of the staff could probably use some training on how to provide a higher level of service. Being able to do the "little things" (e.g., vacuum carpets, specially welcome loyal Hilton Guests, and display a little more courtesy/friendliness) would go a long way to elevating this hotel to the class it in which it should be.

Dear Guest,

I appreciate you taking the time to share your recent experience. Thank you for the kind comments in respect to the food quality, room accommodations and of course Eddie! I will definitely pass along your praise of his service.

Your thorough feedback pertaining to the constructive points highlighted are greatly appreciated. I regret you encountered such issues in the first place and hope you will accept my sincerest apologies. The team views these issues as an opportunity for improvement and immediate action will be taken to rectify. The room categories are currently undergoing reassignment to ensure all guest rooms deemed city view are indeed appropriate. The fitness center will undergo a renovation in the coming year and the Food & Beverage department is implementing procedures to alleviate the dining experience you outlined.

I would like the opportunity to regain your confidence in the Conrad Chicago. Please feel free to contact me so that we can discuss your experience in more detail.

Kind Regards,

Nice room, very friendly staff, great location. Walked to many sites. Close to Billy Goat Tavern and Harry Carey's bar, and many other resturants, connected to North Bridges shopping center. Fast room service (20 min).

Stayed here for 4 nights in July 2010. Got a great deal through priceline so I think I got a steal on what the usual rate is. Parking was expensive but that's pretty much Chicago. $40 a day to self park in the garage across the street. It is a 3 minute walk to Michigan Ave and you're a 5 - 10 minute cab ride to most anything in downtown Chicago so location is great. It gets kind of noisy at night with sirens but again, thats downtown Chicago. The outdoor patio bar is awesome. It has a great view of downtown since it is a few stories above the street. Rooms were beautiful with very modern asthetics, flat panel television and granite in the bathrooms. If I got the same rate as I got last time I'd definitely stay here again. Very nice hotel.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Conrad. The room was gorgeous and spacious especially the bathroom which had a huge tub and separate shower!! The room was equipped with loads of nice amenties including robes and slippers. The bed was incredibly comfortable. The staff was extremely nice and accomodating. I wish we had more time to spend at the lovely terrace bar. My only complaint was that we really weren't in the room or at the hotel much so we didn't get to enjoy all the Conrad had to offer.
