“Different experience, is worth the wait!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2013 via mobile

Went for dinner. Waiting time was 2hrs. We went shopping for a while and called to check on our wait. They were very nice and info me the exact rime that the table was going to be ready. Kids loved the taking off the shoes tradition... Waitress helped us ordering since we were new to the experience. Steamed Dumplings were amazing! Garlic rice yummi! It was really a great, fun difference experience.

“Different here means Good....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2013

I have nothing bad to say about this place! I will be back.

I went here for dinner with my lady. Of course there was a +40 min wait but what else do you expect in downtown chi at 6pm. They took us upstairs to their bar where we could wait. Drinks are about $3-$8 for those of you who are watching your wallet.

Then came the food. The food, the food, the food! Mmmmmm! the server was phenomenal and he did a great job explaining how things went since it was our first time. Everything I ate from the sushi to the Kobe steak was delicious! Not to mention the shrimp from Indonesia. And for dessert, smores! Instead of a fortune cookie they were different and provided us with the smores to end the night. If you like Korean barbecue go here!!! Go for Happy Hour if you can, everything is discounted and it makes a big time difference. Never would've expected it to taste this good for the price they were charging. Pleasant surprise.

“Good location, good food, excellent value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

- Excellent, excellent value for money
- Conviently located right off the main shopping area
- Hardly any wait at lunchtime
- Very well prepared meats and vegetables

Had a business lunch here during the summer; the place is not in a busy street itself, but just off the main shopping area. We were seated straight away and ordered a selection of various dishes to share. All the vegetables and meats were well prepared and marinated. Grilling it yourself can here is a much better experience than the average grill or work restaurant; party due to the cleverly designed air suction systems in the grill that prevent any smoke or smells to spread through the restaurant. Service was quick and good.

You have to be in the mood for grilling your own food, if you are this place offers a unique experience.

“Horrible service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

I went to Gyu-Kaku Chicago with my friend, 6 person in total. During this lunch, we have to wait for 10 min to order rice. Before the rice was served, we have to eat the salty meat with no rice. Moreover, the waiter even spilled a cup of ice water on my friend‘s pants, his shoes was wet for the rest of that afternoon. At the end of our disastrous meal, they still charged us for 20% gratuity. The last time I was charged by a restaurant for 20% gratuity was in Alinea Restaurant, there were 3 waiters for our 6-person table for 3 hours. How could they feel that their horrible service worth 20% gratuity?

“Fun, Delicious, and Great Value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2013

We waited for 1.5 hours for a table at Gyu-Kaku on a Saturday night. It was worth it.

This restaurant was a fantastic, somewhat random find (we decided to eat here when passing by with my 11-year-old daughter, who really liked her experience at the Honolulu location). Here's why we enjoyed it so much:

1) It was fun. By introducing the aspect of grilling your own meal, dinner became an activity. Our server (Airi) was an incredible director of entertainment, who was helpful (with navigating the menu recommendations), friendly ((yet unobtrusive), and very efficient.

2) The food was amazing. And I'm not saying that because we 'cooked' it ourselves. We had the Samurai Course to eliminate the complexity of picking stuff ourselves, but added a few things like the Gyu-Tan tongue and a few veggies. Everything was fresh and delicious, without the need for dressing anything up,

3) Great value. We paid less than $100 for 3 people. We spent about the same amount for a Chicago architecture boat tour earlier in the day, and had about at much fun, but here we got to eat too!

I believe that this has become a destination that we must return to when we are in Chicago again. Next time, I'll try to make a reservation!
