Let me set the record early, this was my father and I's first experience at Chicago Q after much anticipation. I was anxious to taste this competition BBQ that I had only seen on TLC's BBQ Pitmasters and to meet the beautiful Lee Ann Whippen. The interior and exterior decor is beautiful and the service was impeccable, we felt that we were guests in their home and everyone was so nice. I cannot remember my server's name, but he was awesome throughout. We also met Lee Ann Whippen who is the Chef/Partner of the place and she is even more stunning in person, we were grateful that she came over to speak to us briefly, very nice woman.
BBQ CHICKEN - get this chicken, it's smoked and covered in some sauce. It's PHENOMENAL, probably the best smoked wings that I've had in a long time. The presentation is wonderful as well.
Hush Puppies - Best hush puppies that I've ever had, period. No explanation needed, they were tasty and the spicy sauce that came with it made it more enjoyable and delectable.
Beer : Polestar Pilsner, very clean and light bodied beer. It was the recommendation of the knowledgeable server, he did not disappoint, it is a craft beer from Colorado. If you like Stella Artois, Becks, and Heineken Light then you would like this ALOT!
I had the "Q2" which was cornbread, 1/2 slab of st. louis style BBQ ribs, brisket, and a side of brulee'd Mac n Cheese. I am not going to sugar coat it, the ribs were perfectly smoked and they fell off the bone. The meet could've been blew off the bone if you chose to do so. However, it lacked significant flavor and smoke! I barely tasted the smokiness in the ribs that I had so hoped for.
The cornbread is to die for, it is made with honey and real corn and it is the best cornbread that you'll probably ever have! It's a big square piece of corn bread that looks amazing.
The Brisket did not taste good in my opinion. Like the ribs, it could've had more of a char crust and that smoked flavor, it did not. It tasted very "roast beefy" which wasn't good.
My father had the same "Q2" and he had the st. louis style BBQ ribs and the pulled pork AND the collard greens. The pulled pork was just "OK", however with the mild original bbq sauce, the pulled pork tastes great. The collard greens were some of the best greens that I had ever tasted. I wish that every time I ate the greens that they tasted just like that, PERFECTION!
Dessert - No room...maybe next time. If there is a next time.
This is a great restaurant with a great interior decor with an awesome staff and Chef. This is also a great place for a small intimate gathering upstairs in their lounge area.
Ribs/Pulled Pork/Brisket issue: SMOQUE has them beat as far taste is concerned. I've patronized SMOQUE since they began and they have catered a party of mine some time ago and every time, the ribs, brisket, and pulled pork is full of that smoked flavor and all the ribs have that carmelized char with the meet that's falling off the bone. The meet is smoked to a perfection so well that all the meat on the ribs are pink for the most part, not just a barely noticeable pink ring. All their sides are great as well. I also didn't notice an aroma from the smoked ribs as it came to my table.
At any rate, if you're not willing to make somewhat of a trip to SMOQUE which has led space in the dining room, and on a busy night, you could be waiting outside to get in like a nightclub. It's totally worth it. However, if you're in the gold coast/near north area and you're looking for a nice modern BBQ place, this may be the spot. However, I'd personally make the trip to SMOQUE, much better overall BBQ, it's less elegant, but hey, you're eating BBQ, who cares.
Now if Lee Ann or anyone else from Chicago Q reads this, the aforementioned is not to bash, but to simply bring to your attention. You all certainly have the potential and with some minor adjustments, to the meat area of the restaurant similar to Smoque, I think you all could be my new place of choice for BBQ. However, smoque still reigns supreme as far as food is concerned only, not anything else.
