“Plan to spend an afternoon or more...so much to explore!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

Excellent authentic Chinese foods of all types. You cannot go wrong here, many little stores and groceries to visit, a real treasure south of the loop in Chicago.

“Not an attraction....a great experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

We went on our annual Spring Break trip to Chicago. I know.... that sounds funny because everyone goes where its warm but we love Chicago and its a great time to go and visit. This year we decided to go visit "Chinatown" because we love to explore the neighborhoods around the city. It is fairly easy to get to from the West Suburbs but one must pay close attention to the signs because you can truly get off on the wrong exit. Visiting "Chinatown" once you are already in the city would be easier--Take Michigan Avenue to Cermak Road and head West! Parking is very easy to find and very reasonable. If you spend more than $20.00 at a participating restaurant they will validate your parking ticket and you get two dollars off. The restaurants are listed on a sign by the parking ticket information. We ate a restaurant called "Go 4 Food". It was very clean, affordable and authentic. They do not validate parking tickets. The service was good!! There are a lot of great little shops to visit and experience and a lot of history to take in as well as wonderful photos ops. We went during the day and I felt perfectly safe walking around and taking in the sights. Worth the time to spend a few hours wondering around!

“run down”

Very dirty and lots of crime, but you can find some good things for low prices such as dim-sum, or miniature bamboo plants.

“A mix of old and new”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

I agree with other reviewers who see Chinatown not as an attraction but rather an ethnic community that offers some amenities for visitors, like authentic food and groceries. Being a smaller collection of neighborhoods than in San Francisco or New York, one cannot expect the kind of innovation of the big cities. That said, there is good food to be had. The dim sum is good (if not extraordinary), and the newer restaurants offer more "regional" dishes from Szechuan and Shanghai, as well as very popular hot pot from Hong Kong and Beijing. The bakeries have delicious, fresh baked buns with sweet (squash, bean, peanut) filling or meat filling (beef, pork, ham, chicken). There are many places that sell a filling and delicious bowl of noodles and soup, and to accompany them, fresh fruit smoothies with large tapioca balls (boba), invented on the west coast and now popular everywhere. There are Chinese grocery and book stores, although much smaller than Californian stores. Finally, a roasted chicken or duck makes a great dinner, and these can be purchased through several barbecue restaurants. Parking in one of the lots next to Chinatown is sometimes validated by restaurants (though rules change all the time).
