Description: This is a new restaurant from the house of Bannos (owners of the infamously popular Heaven on Seven, here in Chicago). They have now opened what could affectionately be called the foodie tourists' dream come true, with everything from bone marrow to fried pig's ears and fresh ricotta as well as a nice selection of paninis, and of course, the wines. Not to mention: Its right on the Magnificent Mile!

“Purple is my favorite color!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

Nothing purple about this place - but it was very good. We were welcomed immediately and provided a seat at a high top table - family style. This is a very busy little place. The menu has some very unique items on it and we saw some interesting dishes being served to our table mates (bone marrow, spreads, and pig ears). We weren't that daring, but what we ordered was good. Pork with mashed potatoes that melted in your mouth. The best scallops grilled to perfection - disappointed we were only served 3 for $16. If you only get one thing....get the Iris dessert. My oh my....this was one fantastic powdered sugared slice of heaven. Sort of like a a benet from New Orleans but lighter and filled with melted chocolate served warm and to die for!!!!

“Great location, great cheese, lovely wine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013 via mobile

I visited the Purple Pig yesterday mid-afternoon with my husband. We had tried to get a table the night before, but the wait was very long. We still waited about 45 minutes for a table at 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon, but we shared a half bottle of Chardonnay and enjoyed the people-watching. He and I shared a cheese plate, a salad and a panini and it was all wonderful. The restaurant is relatively small and very noisy. The staff was very knowledgeable of the wine and the cheese. The menus for both were impressive.

High recommend it and look forward to going back!

“Great dining experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

The Purple Pig is a wonderful culinary delight. They serve small dishes so you can try many different things and share them. Based on other TA recommendations we started with the Bone Marrow appetizer. It was amazing. Two large bones (cut in half) are served with a wonderful salad, toasted bread and sea salt. This is as good as advertised. For our next courses we ate Fava beans with eggs leeks and prosciutto. This chilled salad was bright and refreshing. Next came the fried Pigs ear with Kale and a fried egg. At the table we broke the egg and mixed it with the other ingredients. For our main course we ordered the braised pork shoulder and chicken thigh kabobs, both were cooked perfectly. Both dishes were supposed to come with potatoes (which I can't eat) so the kitchen graciously substituted the roasted cauliflower. This was also excellent. This was our first time at the Purple Pig and we were not disappointed. We will definitely come again.

“Enjoy the show”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

The food was good, the service was thoughtful and the wine was great. There was a great selection, and the small plates allow you to pace yourself. I sat at the bar with a view of the kitchen, and this was really the highlight. I ordered wine first, and asked for 3 cheeses to pair and the recults were excellent with a great selection. I also had the prok shoulder and sardines and I was quite satisfied. The experience may not be life changing, but it is fun and good if you are in the right mood. If you are looking for intimate and quiet, this may not be the place. And the hostess wasn't particularly charming, but the server was. I waited for the bar instead of a table, and was glad of it, although if I had been in a hurry it would nto have been the right choice. Go, relax, and have fun. If you are on your own it's great - no awkwardness at all!
