On a return leg from further North, our family stayed over 1 night at the Palomar on the way home. Excellent customer service began when we pulled off State St. onto the property and were immediately greeted by a young man who helped get the car out of traffic, opened doors for all, and helped pull our luggage out of the trunk - without pressuring us to have it taken inside by one of the bellmen. The hotel itself was VERY nicely decorated with modern motif and great colors and furnishings. When we approached the desk to check in, we were immediately informed that it was still happy hour with complimentary wine, etc. and invited to relax with a glass of wine before heading upstairs with our luggage - and the hotel staff asked what our wine preference was and went into the serving room to bring us both a glass! We sat in the lobby with our luggage sipped our wine before getting another glass and heading on up to our room. The room was reasonably spacious and located on the 15th floor. It was well decorated, spotless and everything worked - including the AC which we were grateful for as the temp was 90+ degrees. Beds were WAY comfortable and the decor was modern and the room was quiet. Bath fixtures were upscale, and the Kimpton robes were nice - but one of the best surprises was our room came with a pet! We had a goldfish in a bowl - named it Sushi - sitting on the wall unit that also held the TV, small fridge, microwave and the work/internet desk and chair. We went exploring to the 17th floor where the pool, well appointed (with medicine balls, treadmills, cycles, etc.) workout room and the "terrace patio" were located. The patio provided great seating for either doing a little sunbathing or mingling with other guest and/or friends - with a killer view of Chicago's downtown area to the east.
That evening we took a cab to Navy Pier (about 6 blocks) and had cocktails and watche dthe Saturday night fireworks display before strolling back to the Palomar. Spent a very restful night and awoke the next morning and went to breakfast at a nearby Starbucks - although I was tempted by the "Weber Grill" a block or so away with it's Weber BBQ theme, but didn't make it. After check out we drove over to the Water Tower shops to kill time before heading to Midway Airport to catch a 7:15pm flight home. All in all, this Kimpton property adheres to the high standards of cleanliness and customer satisfaction that we have encountered in Washington, DC (Helix Hotel) and San Francisco (Argonaut). Given the going rate in downtown Chicago, the rate was reasonable. Be advised that parking ones vehicle in downtown Chicago is on par with the cost to park at any hotel in a large city. I hIghly recommend the Palomar and there are three other Kimpton properties in the Chicago area - a good reason for another visit, only next time it will be a "couples" trip!
I think the upper floors may be a bit quieter being above the traffic.
