“Something VERY different....something wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2012

I stayed at the Bridgeport Bed and Breakfast in mid-September with my family in connection with specialist hospital treatment in Springfield, IL for our four-year old daughter. Before flying back to Denmark, we decided to spend an extra night and day in Chicago. As a former student at the University of Chicago I decided to look for something nearby and different in terms of accommodation; not just “another” hotel room and ideally with a bit more “sincere” (Chicago) feel to it. Based on other Tripadvisor reviews we decided to contact Dave Samber (the chef and owner of the Bridgeport Bed and Breakfast) and to make a reservation. At first we were a bit skeptical (we are always like that). What about the location? And the quality of accommodation and food? It turned out that there was nothing to fear at all. On the contrary! We stayed in a spacious suite. The room was perfectly clean, quiet and with brand new carpeting. The beds were very comfortable as well. The location is not bad either. It probably takes about 15 minutes to drive to downtown Chicago. The complimentary parking is a big plus - easy and convenient. However, what makes this place “something different…something wonderful” (as the logo says) it not the quality of the rooms or the location. It is the attitude of the owner and the staff! Before and during our entire stay we felt a very unique, sincere hospitality and attention to detail in order to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. It is worth mentioning that Dave even prepared a wonderful three-course early dinner upon our arrival late in the afternoon despite the restaurant normally being closed at that time. In particular the flame-grilled burgers were to die for. Prime meat and cooked to perfection! Breakfast next morning was also a very special experience with numerous “signature dishes”. Impossible to describe – you simply need to visit and enjoy Dave’s cooking skills! The rest of the staff is also great and very friendly. Special thanks go to Kevin and Buddy (a thirteen-year old beautiful Akita). Would we recommend this place? Yes, absolutely. Will we return? Yes, we very much hope that we will be able to return to the Bridgeport Bed and Breakfast in the not too distant future with the rest of the family (ideally not because of necessary specialist hospital treatment, though). This place truly is “something VERY different….something wonderful”! Thank you, Dave & Co. We had a truly memorable stay!

“Good For What It Is”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

Not recommended for ease of downtown access without a car. Little far from major routes on foot alone. Not bad if you don't mind a little walking, but wouldn't stay again. This is the first time I'd tried a B&B, granted it may be a prefered experience for some. It's an older building, slightly run down and the toilet did not work properly. Set up like apartments with two stair wells on either end of flat. Felt somewhat vulnerable sleeping at night. Not many people around neighborhood or building. Seemed safe, but at times poorly lit and a little too quiet. Having said this, it was peaceful and deffinately out of the way of tourism. Neighborhood restaurant on the lower level, breakfast included with stay. Delicious and ample meals, but required an exact time for eating. Proved less flexible as I had no set schedule for sight seeing or evening excursions. Owners were good, lived in top flat. One friendlier than the other.

“This is definitely a FIVE Star Hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

July 2012: Five of us stayed in the "Mayor's Suite" which was gorgeous and utterly magnificient. I felt like a queen with the luxury of enjoying a step back in time. The Innkeeper, Dave Samber made this the most enjoyable part of our trip to Chicago with his magnificient chef delights and his most interesting and injoyable historical recounts of the people and the building itself. I was there with my 84 yr old mother and step father and Dave and his Bed and Breakfast was the highlight of our entire trip. My step father is still talking about having breakfast with the POPE and candles! We will always remember this stay.
Very accommodating, the bests are the greatest. Can't say enough! Most enjoyable time spent in Chicago! Thanks Dave and Staff Members!

“Delightful Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2012

I spent about ten days here and was delighted with the experience. Dave was a most gracious host and fixed outstanding breakfasts each morning. The suite was perfect with a touch of old and new. It is located on a nice quite and safe street in the Bridgeport section of Chicago and Dave provided shuttle service as required. Downstairs is the Polo Cafe which has an excellent menu and outstanding food. I will be staying here on future trips to Chicago, without a doubt! Thanks!

“Cool Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2012

I stayed in the Sox Suite with a couple friends on a weekend trip. We had three bedrooms, a dining area, kitchen and bathroom. The decor was unique but perfect us as baseball fans. Lots of White Sox decorations and memorabilia. Dave and Kevin were gracious hosts and went out of their way on several occasions. Great breakfast, very comfortable stay. It beat staying in a hotel by a long shot.
