Oh, what a wonderful menu! For our pre-opera (OK, "Oklahoma") dinner, what a pleasure it was to skip the usual & boring restaurants that flank the streets near Lyric Opera in Chicago. Province, on Jefferson between Lake & Randolph, offered wide wine & drink selections at reasonable prices and then did not disappoint with the variety of tasty dishes.
Despite our tardy arrival due to horrendous reverse-commute traffic, the front-of-restaurant staff more than accommodated our need to speed up dinner to get to the opera house on time! Even with that in mind, the server gently eased us into a calm state with timely, informative questions about our needs and then expedited the orders without fuss. That was refreshing! No attitude about "rushing" the kitchen staff. Kudos to the owners for that kind of training.
We enjoyed a lovely grenache in classic, stemless glassware. Riedel? Then, a lovely shot glass filled with a spicy chopped veg amuse bouche suddenly appeared on the table accompanied by perfectly crispy & thin breadsticks for dipping in a white bean dip. As my heart rate dropped while wolfing down these delights, I then was able to completely enjoy the sea scallop ceviche, which was thin-layered atop transparent jicama slices. Wow, was that good. The artichoke & spinach salad, although called a "small" plate, could have passed for a lunch entree for many folks. It was perfectly dressed in a light-light lemony vinaigrette. But my personal favorite was the bbq'd duck on a creamy grits bed. As we rushed to pay the bill & high-tail it to the opera house, the server suggested we grab a handful of the perfect "Province" shortbread cookies on the way out.
These guys understand service & do it in style. I will return. Thanks for the memories!!
