For a Chicago experience far from the tourist attractions of downtown and the near north, head over to this strip, especially on a Sunday afternoon. It used to be a mostly Jewish neighborhood but is now primarily an Indo-Pakistani one. Loads of Indian and Pakistani eateries mingle with sari palaces, Bollywood video stores, jewelers selling exquisite gold filigree, and various other ethnic specialty shops. The last section still has a trace of the former Jewish flavor but also includes a fine Russian deli.
A multi-ethnic Chicago experience not to be missed. Despite being crowded and a tad grungy in spots, this is a perfectly safe neighborhood. Parking is a bit difficult at times, however.
