“Clean & Safe -- Great Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2006

While a little pricey for a bunk bed ($35pp/nt), this hostel is very clean, well maintained, very friendly staff and has great security. The beds were very comfortable, although the pillows are fairly sub-par and the towels are quite thin. There is a bathroom with a seperate shower room and a seperate toilet room attached to each dorm room which was quite spacious and clean. There was also more bathrooms on each level, laundry and a room with tables & vending machines. You recieve a key card at check in which is required to get into your room and to use the elevator, and gives you access to the building past 9pm when the doors are locked. There were quite a few resturaunts within a few blocks, the subway was only 3 blocks away and the waterfront was also about 3 blocks. The hostel has multiple activities set up every day, although I didn't go on any, and there's lots of brochures and info in the lobby. Lots of families and youth groups as well as young adults were there during my two night stay.

Visited Chicago for a conference in March 2006 and stayed at this hostel. Being that I had never stayed at a hostel before, I didn't know what to expect. This place was wonderful, though. It is as nice or nicer than many hotels I have stayed in, the staff was very friendly and helpful, the common areas, guest rooms, furnishings, carpeting, and linens were well-maintained and clean. Security was excellent, with card pass main entryway, card pass elevator, card pass guest room doors, and 24 hour security staff on the first level. I stayed in a 6-bed room with an attached shower and toilet rooms, both were cleaned every other day. Felt very safe and comfortable in this hostel and would highly recommend it to others!

Lovely hostel. Very clean, bright, modern. The building is an old factory, so the ceilings are high and the rooms have a little character in their shape and detail. Desk the staff is knowledgable, helpful, and excited. Bathrooms next to spotless. White linens stain free and fresh smelling. Not the place you want to be if you're in the market for a quarky hostel packed with piles of free-spirited, partying young people. But a great centrally located hostel that will give you a refreshing, comfortable night's rest.

Stayed in a dorm room in this hostel in October and was very impressed.

Location

If you are arriving by train from O'Hare, it is only a couple of blocks from the La Salle station on the Blue Line. It is also well situated for access to the main toursit areas you may wish to visit in the city.

Cleanliness

Very clean and well maintained.

Bathroom Facilities.

There could do with some upgrading as each floor had only two showers and two toilet cubicles.

Given that there were a number of 10 bed dorm rooms on each floor, they were not really sufficient for the nunbers of people. I think that the bathrooms could do with an overhaul, with more modern shower cubicles and showers to be installed.

Events

There appeared to be a number of different events organised by the hostel on different nights of the week. I would highly recommned Bobby Chicago's 3 hour guided bike tour of the city. Only $15 if you are staying at the hostel.

There are also discounts on Sears Tower tickets and the Chicago architecture cruise which is also highly recommended.

Overall

I was very happy with my stay in this hostel and would recommend it to any traveller on a budget in Chicago. Having spoken to other travellers staying in Chicago's other hostels it appears to be the best of the bunch.

Stayed here one night in August in a family room. Rates were wonderful.
Room was small but clean and good. Facility is great - historic, clean, lots of neat extras. International students made it very interesting for children. Bag check service is great (check bags for $1/day.)

For students it's great. Kitchen, restaurants, meeting space, internet, lots of info, even some special trips and tours.

For a small family, family rooms are fine and convenient location can't be beat.

I'd stay here again, definitely. We're not into fancy - just convenient, safe and clean. HI-Chicago has all that and more.

Also check out the CTA transit deals for visitors.
