“Good Hotel for Columbia College Parents”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2011

We have stayed at numerous hotels in the area while our son looked at various colleges before selecting Columbia College and now we only stay at The Blake. The location is great for meeting our son and close to subway if we want to venture further. The in and out parking is reasonably priced and quite handy when we take our son to Costco to refill his frig and visit his favorite restaurant, Kuma’s Corner, which is not easily reached by subway. The rooms are nice sized, clean and quiet upgrades appear each time we stay. The staff is consistent; I think the same person picks up the phone every time I call for reservations and even the bell person seems to remember everyone. If we encounter a problem, it is addressed right away – only happened once but was resolved to our satisfaction. It has a feel of nice small boutique hotel rather than large overblown chain. We had some concerns when it became a Wyndham, but the fears were ungrounded and in fact improvements have been noticeable. The nightly rates seem to fluctuate each time we stay but I check other hotels and they are below surrounding hotels. During the winter, we received some unbelievable rates. There is also a special rate for Columbia Parents – this is our hotel of choice, highly recommend.

Room Tip: Rooms with a view of the library make me smile.

The beds in this hotel were so comfortable that when I got home, I decided to go buy a new mattress. The continental breakfast was ordinary though, but if you're Australian like me you'll find all American continental breakfasts to be ordinary. Good location to the CTA train and subway lines. I would stay here again.

I recently stayed at this hotel for my own wedding. Almost all of my out of town guests stayed here as well. I found the hotel to be quite nice in terms of the actual room- it was spacious, had quality bedding and towels, and good bathroom products. I found the staff to be nice but a little pushy. The location was fantastic and many people really enjoyed being close to all the attractions. However, several of my guests exclaimed "this might be the WORST hotel I've EVER stayed in" because there were no refrigerators or microwaves in the rooms. For the amount of money we were paying it was terrible that those sorts of amenities were not included. Moreover, when I called to ask about the refrigerators the front desk told me I could "rent one for $30 a day." Seriously? You've got to be kidding me. To top it off most people ended up leaving their cars in other lots because the hotel charges over $40 a night for parking- that just seems a little bit exorbitant. I would not stay here again for full price.

Thank you for sharing your experience at the Wyndham Blake. We are sorry that the stay did not meet your expectations. Unfortunately, we do not receive a lot of request for refrigerators in the rooms, but we do have them for the rare occassions that a guest will request one. We have researched parking rates in the city and our parking fee is competitive with other properties in downtown Chicago and in many cases less than some of the other properties. As you will see by many of our other reviews, our staff is trained to be hospitable and attentive. We apologize if you feel that it was too much. We do hope that when you travel to Chicago, you will think of us.

The hotel is located near the Printer's row and has an old hotel feel. The rooms are lovely, spacious and comfortable, but don't have refrigerators. We stayed on the 3rd floor. I think the hotel is actually 2 buildings connected to each other so some of the rooms on the same floors are actually half above and half below you. Consequently, there's a lot of noise during the day, feet scuffling and walking, etc. Also, since the room is close to the street, every ambulance passing is like an alarm clock ringing. The location's ideal for business travelers, I guess, since it's closer to the financial area and most of the "tourist-y" sights are a bit farther but still accessible. There's a breakfast voucher for the restaurant next door although the food there is a little blah...

The staff is very helpful and nice, especially the night doorman "Showtime", who was always helpful in suggesting restaurants and eateries. Had a great stay and would love to stay here again.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms near the street

Thank you so much for sharing your experience at the Wyndham Blake Chicago. With a downtown location, the traffice noises are unavoidable. Greg "Showtime" is a wonderful asset to our hotel. His warm demeanor and knowledge of the city is well known to the guest that frequent the hotel. We do look forwrad to your return and again, thank you for sharing.

I stayed at the Wyndham Blake to attend a conference at the Chicago Hilton. (The Blake was 3 blocks away and $50 per night less) The Blake is wonderful and beautiful, an older hotel that has been updated in a classy way. The employees were gracious and helpful. The room was well-appointed and spacious. The bed and pillows were tres comfortable. In all, a great experience.

The Hotel's location is on the Historic Registry, but doesn't come off as behind the times. The room was welcoming and clean, the bathroom was tidy, and the large, rain showerhead a welcome surprise. Certainly very quiet (likely due to only six rooms on this floor), it also made for a relaxing return from a long workday. In-room dining as expected, breakfast arrived on time and hot, another welcome bonus.
No major issues with this stay, the staff was very helpful and welcoming each time coming back from work. For a hotel that is located close to public transit, competitively priced, and a stone's throw from the nearest cab, it is well worth it.

Suggestions are to include the in-room fridge and put a close location for ice...

Pointers- take a pass on the in-room Wolfgang Puck's coffee, unless you're really desperate (like me) and cross the street and get a Starbucks. The front doorman 'Showtime' is your key for good suggestions for your restaurants!
