The extra 1/2 is for the sincere effort of the staff. Others would give it a 4 but I'm a brat. To make it brief I'll list what I like and didn't like. As I have already said the staff is friendly, helpful and understood my "suggestions" but their hands were tied to make changes/ improvements. What I liked:
I liked the rate we received, the impressive list of amenities, especially if you joined their club. There is no charge, so join. You will get free wifi. The list of perks is too long, go online to see. We had a Gold Room which allowed us access to the concierge lounge. I liked how roomy our room was. (It was a Gold King room). The windows were wall-to-wall and the view was nice. The bathroom was very nice with separate space for a glassed-in shower, a door to close for the toilet and the bathroom was still useable, and a soaking tub. All fixtures were updated. There was a nice sized closet. Although we didn't use the Spa, we took a look and is was a very nice facility, complete with a steam room. The location was good as we could walk to Millinium Park and The Art Institute. You could walk to the Magnificent if you were fit .
What I didn't like. Although there was a soaking tub, it was narrow and was not deep enough. There were only four drawers in the room and they were on the floor ( two in the nightstands and two in a bench at the end of the bed. The bedding. Our bed was too soft but after the first night and day with a sore back, they inserted a board. That worked. The pillows were awful in spite of the fact they had three different choices. The linens were so-so. One word about the dumbest thing I've seen yet, there is a safe on a giant pedestal in the MIDDLE of the closet! Although the Gold lounge was a pleasant space and some of the food was good some of the time (excellent smoked salmon, Prosciutto ham, Genoa salami, croissants). BUT it was served twice a day EVERY day and thank God it was because the other offerings were nothing. But you even get tired of a good thing when it's all you get. BREAKFAST WAS PRETTY GOOD but when the evening offering included deep fried mac n' cheese balls it makes you wonder who they think they're catering to. Even thought the croissants were good, they were soggy as were the pastries. The bread and bagels came out of plastic bags. Not worth the calories. There was no way to heat bread items or make toast. Worst was when we arrived and thought we could get a bite at the lounge after a day of travel. We hadn't eaten all day and were told we hade to wait an hour and a half for food. The only offering was a cookie. Not very welcoming for a concierge floor. Other minuses; There was no rooftop lounge or a pretty place to sit outside. I wasn't impressed with any of the food offerings in the hotel. They need a good Restaurant. Oh, and the walls are tissue paper.
It wouldn't take much to make this hotel a top contender, just a little tweaking.
Don't get a room near the elevators. You can hear everything.
