“Still elegant - minor flaws”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

The Palmer House oozes history, and the elegance of a bygone era while providing excellent service, modern amenities and reasonable rates. It is centrally located in the Loop near theaters, the Art Institute and a relatively short walk to the River North neighborhood with some top notch restaurants. Our double room on the 20th floor was smaller than some we’ve had in the past but large enough for comfort, very clean, quiet and tastefully appointed. Room temperature control is excellent, as it can switch immediately between heat and air conditioning. Unfortunately, our room safe did not work properly. A security person was sent in about 20 minutes, but it was not fixed until the next morning as a locksmith was required to do the repair. Doorstop was off bathroom door, so to prevent loud banging against bathtub we placed a washcloth on edge of tub. Room coffee makers would be a real plus for this hotel but are not provided. Hotel offers self-parking with in-and-out privileges during stay. The lobby bar/cocktail lounge is a great place to have a drink and soak up the atmosphere where the likes of Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde and Buffalo Bill once hung out.

Room Tip: Higher floors are quieter. Elevator service to upper floors is excellent. You should probably avoid...

Beautiful & elegant lobby with lots of old world charm conveniently located to Millenium Park & Chicago Art Institute. The bathroom is tiny and it's uncomfortable manuevering in such a tight space. I'm only 5'1 and not overweight; Can't imagine how an average or big person can maneuver in this compact space. Had to call several times to get shampoo, towels, & coffee - this was inconvenient.

The hotel is at an awesome location as far as downtown is concerned. Train stations to the red line are right outside the door. The rail to the airport - orange line- is right outside the other side. Getting a train or a cab is no problem from here. Located within walking distance to many fine eateries. The staff was exceptional! The common areas are grand. The hotel is spotless. The only complaint that I would have is that the room I had was very small, I was alone so it was not a huge problem but it would have been tight for one than one person.

Old world feeling in a great hotel. The Palmer House is our preferred hotel when staying in Chicago. Love the style, location and friendliness of the staff. We almost always book on the executive level - nicer rooms.

Room Tip: Nicer rooms on the Executive Level

The lobby is archetecturally stunningand a nice spot to have a pre or post dinner cocktail. The staff were all very helpful and accomodating. Stayed in a King suite and had his and hers bathrooms which I love.

We stay here often for business every time we come to Chicago. The hotel is very centralized and is close to all the shopping. Concierge is always very helpful. The rooms are very clean and the staff is always friendly.
