“Could have been a perfect birthday...”

I reserved the "Rock star" suite for my boyfriend's birthday months and months in advanced. When we arrived at the Hotel Monaco, they told us that they doubled booked the room. This was after many emails to the hotel inquiring about the room and if it was available. They tried to make up for it by providing us with a room with a wonderful view of the river and giving us a ten dollar gift certificate to their resturant - which we didn't even use. I felt we were taken advantage of because we were young. The doorman didn't make us feel any better when he told us that it wasn't the first time they did this for the "rock star" suite. However, the conceirge was incredible with providing us with a bottle of champagne for his birthday and delivered the birthday cake I ordered. If it wasn't for the room confusion - It would have been a wonderful stay.

“A little gem in a big city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2007

My Husband and I received a stressful call from our college student at 8:00 pm, and we needed to be in Chicago as soon as possible. After a long trip we arrived at 1:00 am and started our search for a hotel. We were exhausted, worried, and I packed in such a hurry I forgot a multitude of things. We took a wrong turn, and in trying to get back on Michigan avenue we saw the Hotel Monaco. It was as if they knew we were coming, they were so helpful and kind to us. Not only did we get a room, but the room was stunning, warm, and a with a beautiful view. The bathroom was stocked with everything we needed. In the morning there was a walgreens right next door for the extra things I had forgot to pack, and really any store you could ever want or need is within walking distance. We ate breakfast in the restaurant, and again, I felt as if the Server picked up on the fact that we were worried and tired, and he went out of his way to make us comfortable. Chicago can feel overwhelming, and the Hotel Monaco is a little gem in a big city. The location is perfect. The room was bright, colorful, and our room had two big window seats you could sit in and watch the city activities or read and relax. It would be a great place for an exciting, well planned trip to Chicago, unlike our unplanned trip in the night, but either way the service is friendly, inviting, and ready to make you feel relaxed and welcomed. Usually a place you stay during a difficult time in your life doesn't leave good memories, but for us, Hotel Monaco was a perfect place.

“Would definitely stay here again”

Loved this place!! It is a very convenient train ride from Midway Airport, and only a block or two away from the Randolph station. We arrived at noon, and even though checkin wasn't until 3 we got our two rooms immediately, which was really nice. My room faced the river and had a huge cushioned window seat (easily the size of a single bed). The king sized bed was very comfortable, and the bedding really nice. Turndown service each night is a great little extra. We had not expected to come back to a filled ice bucket and chocolates on the pillow. The toiletries are very nice, and we appreciated having an umbrella left in the room. My brother had a "tall" room which he liked (longer bed & taller shower), but his view was of the roof and his ice bucket wasn't filled one night. We had the bellhop hold our bags since we weren't leaving town until well after checkout. We had no problems with this either. You are in easy walking distance to Macy's, Nordstrom Rack, Goldcoast dogs, the CTA, a number of bus stops, and just a few blocks from tons of other stores and restaurants. We noticed many people with their dogs, but did not hear any barking in our room. We would definitely stay here again.

“Great view of Chicago River”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2006

I stayed at the Chicago Hotel Monaco for a one-night visit on business. I had a fantastic view of the Chicago River from a room on the 14th floor. Perhaps because I am a member of Kimpton's loyalty program they up-graded me. In any case, the view of the river sitting in the room's window seat was great. As with other Kimpton properties, this hotel has very good Internet access, a good working desk with good lighting, and a good Aeron-style desk chair. It seems like a small matter, but this hotel and other Kimpton hotels consistently offer business travelers a good work space with excellent (and free!) Internet access. It's nice to know that with Kimpton Hotels you can count on being able to get access to email and get work done on a laptop in your room. As with the other Hotel Monaco properties, the Chicago Hotel Monaco has a unique, funky decor, the rooms are larger than average, and very attentive employees. I would agree with other reviewers that the in-house restaurant is not very special. I had breakfast there, and it was only so-so. As others have remarked, the location of this hotel is great, and it is very convenient to the El (and a direct train ride to Midway Airport). I haven't stayed at the Burnham, but the Hotel Monaco strikes me as a very good value, and a great location if you are visiting downtown Chicago.

  • Liked — Location and overall attention to comfort and detail
  • Disliked — in-house restaurant
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask for a room with a view of the River, not the air-shaft on south side of hotel

“Good, but Hotel Burnham is better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2006

We stayed at the Monaco recently and it was very nice. Usually we stay at the Burnham, another Kimpton hotel in Chicago, but decided to try the Monaco given that its web site indicated the room was quite a bit larger in terms of square feet. It wasn't larger. Most of the Burnham rooms have a nice street view of State or Washington. At the Monaco we overlooked an alley.

The Monaco is very nice with an excellent location. Just south of the river with great access to the magnificant Mile, the Loop and the El.

If the Burnham was booked, I'd stay again at the Monaco.
