Owner description: The National Veterans Art Museum is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and exhibition of art inspired by combat and created by veterans. No other gallery in the world focuses on the subject of war from an artistic perspective, making this collection truly unique. With more than 2,000 pieces of art in the permanent collection, the National Veterans Art Museum addresses both historical and contemporary issues related to military service. Artists who served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Afghanistan, Iraq and the Global War on Terror give patrons of all backgrounds insight into the effects of war. In addition, the museum provides veterans an artistic outlet to work through their military and combat experiences.

“Powerful, a living memorial to those who served”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2012

Whenever I think of this museum, I think of the hanging dog tags from the ceiling, that you can get right next to when on the top floor. That alone is worth the visit. I have visited the memorial in Washington, D.C. that honors the fallen in this war and I also find it powerful to visit a museum filled with art by those who survived. The veterans continue to communicate through their art, and help visitors remember their struggles returning to civilian life.

“Moving, emotional, controversial. What art should be.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2011

This museum features art created by veterans of the Vietnam war, as well as recent
conflicts. It is located on the 3rd floor of the building. When you enter into the lobby, look up and see over 58,000 dog tags, each representing a fallen service man or woman from Vietnam. The gallery itself is small, but is filled with images, sculpture, & mixed media showing the complicated impact of war and the restorative power of art. This provocative museum is well worth the visit.
We went on a weekday afternoon, and had no problem parking on the street. This was probably dumb luck. The city has parking restrictions for certain days, times, weather, events, etc. so watch the signs! Or opt for public transportation; check the website for directions.

“Connects with me the way the modern art museum wishes it could.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2009

I visit the city often and was intrigued by this museum as it was my generations war. This is not a great museum nor is it for everyone. But I was glad I came. I really feel it is an example of arts healing ability. If you fought this war, or lived through it, or it touched you in some way, I recommend you go.
