“Decent place to stay for a reasonable price”

I booked this hotel through "name your own price" on Priceline, and thus wasn't able to choose a location a bit closer in to downtown. The hotel is well-maintained, reasonably clean, and directly on a bus line that runs every 15 minutes (weekdays) into downtown -- about a 15 minute ride will put you at State Street looking into the Chicago River.

The room was clean, spacious, and just fine for me. No frills, nothing too fancy.

The hotel did some laundry and dry-cleaning for me, which was helpful since I had been traveling prior to my arrival in Chicago.

We booked this hotel through Hotwire, so we didn't necessarily choose this hotel specifically. We were looking for a hotel in the city close enough to major attractions and the White Sox stadium (where we were seeing a game), but also didn't want to pay a fortune by staying right downtown... We knew when booking that we would be in the south side of downtown Chicago and were willing to make the sacrifice of distance for price.
The hotel is quite nice (nicely decorated, friendly staff, etc) but a little far south - not far enough south to REALLY feel unsafe, but far enough south that it is quite a walk from major attractions and there's not a lot of restaurants within immediate walking distance (because of the lack of restaurants, we paid the $16/person for the breakfast buffet in the morning - not really worth the price, in my opinion, but there weren't any other breakfast options in the area). That being said, it's right on the State Street bus line (right in front of the hotel) which takes you right downtown within about 15 minutes. Transit is very easy to navigate.
The distance aside, the other major downside of this hotel is the fact that it is located right beside the train. Chicago trains are LOUD and you can clearly hear them go by from inside your room. In fact, they are so near that we could feel it shake the bed (the headboard was actually rattling until we stuck something behind it to absorb the impact). Even for a heavy sleeper like myself (I can sleep through practically anything...) it woke me up a couple of times through the night.
The staff were very friendly and we had no problem parking. That is a HUGE bonus for a hotel in Chicago - free parking! It is first come, first served, but there seemed to be enough spots AND it was gated so we felt our car was safe and secure. Although checkout is 11 AM, when we asked the staff kindly told us we could stay parked in the lot till about 4 which gave us some extra time to explore the city before our evening game.
Another very minor comment (it wouldn't be something that would prevent me from returning, but just something I noticed...) the cleaning staff tended to keep their carts in the middle of the halls making it difficult to get around. Again, nothing I would make a big deal out of, but just seemed a little unprofessional.
My favourite part of the hotel was the bathroom - very spacious and the bathtub was so big and deep! Awesome...
Overall, it is worth the price if you want to save some money by staying closer into the city (rather than the outskirts or by the airport), but I MAY be tempted to splurge a little next time to be closer to some of the attractions downtown.

Room was nice, staff was friendly. Only thing was the trains are a little noisy and might be a concern if you a light sleeper. Otherwise everything else was good and it also has free parking which was great.

Check in was bad, the lady who checked us in said 2 words, how about a smile? how about saying you're welcome when I said thank you instead of uh huh.

We got our keys and headed to our room which was quite large, however there were several stains on the floor, in one spot the carpet had been ripped and glued back down.
A few spots on the walls had been patched and painted over.

There were windows that opened, however we needed to close them to try not to hear the subway that passed every few minutes (we could see the trains from our room).
The bathroom seemed like it had recently been redone, however the toilet paper holder seemed to be about 50 years old, it was filthy looking.

Housekeeping never came to our room, to be fair we had the do not disturb sign up first thing in the morning, however it was taken down for the rest of the day.
Normally we'd call the front desk to ask that our room be refreshed, but the disinterest shown upon check in made us not.

Also below our window was the parking lot for the club run by the hotel, even with the windows closed, at closing time we could hear all kinds of yelling and screaming, and cars squealing their tires.

We got the room on hotwire, it was billed as a three star, it should be downgraded, I think two stars is generous.
I wouldn't return.

Room Tip: stay on the opposite side of the subway

My wife and I stayed here for 3 days and nights. I must admit, I was somewhat apprehensive due to the location but in the end there was nothing to worry about! The bus was just across the street and it only took about 15 - 20 minutes to get downtown. We took it every day and never felt uncomfortable. The hotel itself was immaculately clean and new mattresses and pillows had been installed. It passed the inevitable wife's inspection! The room was massive and the TV and WiFi worked perfect! The bathroom was clean as a whistle and if we needed extra towels etc, the staff were more than happy to provide them. All the staff were friendly and helpful! The bar and dining room areas, although in the same hotel, are run by a separate entity but they too were very friendly and accommodating. The food was great and plentiful and breakfast is served til 11am each day. Prices are reasonable. We looked forward to ending each day relaxing in the bar area with a nightcap (or two) and the bar staff remembered us and greeted us with a smile and a hello each time. In the end we had a great time in Chicago, in no small part due to the wonderful experience staying at this hotel. A tip: ask for a room on the west side of the hotel as there is an el train that passes by and I heard some guest say it was a bit noisy. We had no issues of that nature. I was sad to leave the place actually.

Room Tip: Book on the west side of hotel as there is an el train that runs by the the east side about a block...

The biggest problem with the South Loop hotel is that it isn't near anything, The rooms have all been redone. I had a spacious room with a king size bed that certainly served my needs for the 4 night I was there. The staff was friendly and hetlpful and the bar was noisy but decent. The breakfast buffet was standard stuff at average hotel prices.

We were there for a show at McCormick Place so we didnt rent a car (there is parking at the hotel but parking everywhere in Chicago is expensive). There is nothing close to the hotel to walk to and the show shuttle didnt stop at the hotel so we spent a lot of time waiting for cabs.

If you have a vehicle and are looking for a room at a decent price the South Loop hotel is for you.

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the elevated subway line.

Finding the hotel easy. On a main street. Fenced parking with gate keeper. Secure doors for after hours entry. Double beds for our stay. Curved curtain rods for roomy shower. Quiet rooms for the most part. iDock alarm clocks to wake to alarm or your music. Lobby gift shop and office and computer room available. Free wifi in room. Nice art throughout. A mini fridge and a nice clean steam iron in room. Curtains provide amble light blockage to darken room. LCD tv by desk with Cat5 hookup.

Room Tip: The L runs on the East side so if you're a late sleeper pick another direction. If you wake the...
