“Great service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

These employees actually love working here and it shows. Everyone is so friendly and even the smiling breakfast lady even says she "loves to clean up after the guests!" I thought I was at the RItz as everyone was trying to anticipate our needs. Thanks you and we will be back.

Overall:

Rooms - Clean but VERY small (except sitting area)
Bed - Comfortable
Service - horrible (except for the front desk people and house-keeping)
Food - Not horrible, average at best (unless you don't mind a lot of white/simple carbs)
Location - Really good ( you can get a CTA pass around the corner at the CVS) and use the public transportation OR you can walk to many things since its close to Magnificent Mile, etc.

*** read the last paragraph for more tips on where else to stay in comparison to ratings… will save a lot of time and cost the same amount as this hotel if not less some times.

Rooms were clean (with no bed bugs… I checked). As others have stated, there is noise from the fire house (we stayed in a corner room on the 17th floor east side of building… with decent view)… although the noise isn't terrible at that level (I am a light sleeper and it was okay for me) and it wouldn't last more than a few seconds before trailing off.

Rooms were very cramped. The ends of the beds are approximately 1 foot from the wall so you can barely squeeze through. The saving grace on this room was the sitting area they had. The bed were comfortable (even the pull-out sofa bed was better than most and was okay for comfort level… although I personally didn't sleep on it, I did lay on it while watching tv with family.

The service was Terrible with the exception of house-keeping and the front desk which went above and beyond to make are stay nice… they did a good job, but the folks that would make us not want to come back….

We were about a half hour from being ready when I called down to see if we could come get a luggage cart so we'd could start loading it up even though we needed more time to finish getting ready/packing the last of our things… the front desk lady said she would send a bellboy up with one. When he came he refused to leave the cart with us (even though the situation was explained to the front desk) so he took it back with him. I was in the shower when this happened so when my brother and sister-in-law told me about this, I immediately called down to the front desk and explained what happened… she said she would speak with the bellboy about this and get a cart sent to us.

We waited and waited. About a half hour later I called down to the front desk and asked if she had spoken to him and she said she had and was surprised that he had not gotten it to us yet. Before we got off the phone, I decided to check outside the room and there the cart was… he apparently felt he didn't need to knock (maybe he was angry that we were getting the cart and he wasn't getting a tip out of it?) to let us know it was there… maybe he felt we were telepathic and could sense the cart outside the door? This situation is ridiculous for the amount of money that we spent on the room… lets be mature about this bellboy.

At breakfast my brother and sister in-law went down in socks (no shoes)(I personally wouldn't have chosen to go in socks myself, but to each their own). Apparently they refused to let them in and were 'militant' with their statement about shoes and just plain rude. Now don't get me wrong I understand if they are serving hot food and have dished that might break, that there would be a rule for safety, but there is a little thing called tact. My brother and SIL are some of the most laid-back, sweetest people you could ever meet and it is EXTREMELY difficult to offend them, but this staff member did just that.

Breakfast itself was a joke. Yes they give you a bit more options than donuts and bagels, but when they say you will get a hot food, I guess I expect it to be at least warm. I think this is a health-code violation to serve eggs at that temperature. The first day the eggs were decent, the next day they had a bunch of peppers, ham (I think), etc. (which when opened up looked more like someone had puked in it) in their barely better than cold omelet. They should realize that not everyone can eat peppers and that scrambled eggs are the safest bet. This is definitely not a Vegetarian friendly location (although I am not vegetarian) unless you don't mind eating a bunch of which/simple carbs for breakfast.

For the same price we cold have stayed at the Hampton Inn across the street… we decided to cash in some credit card points for a certificate for a Marriott hotel to reduce the cost of our weekend excursion… next time we will use the points for something else… Stay at the Hampton Inn… never had a bad experience with one and have always had great service, comfortable bed and room, and great breakfast! Also, they are rated 11th & 16th (there are two in the downtown area) and the Springhill Suites are 54th. Same prices and star ratings too but trip advisor ratings make it 11th and 16th… amazing. Shows you something about them.

Room Tip: Corner Room (they are slightly bigger) 17th floor or above on the east side of building.

Thank you so much taking the time to write such an extensive review on the property. We appreciate hearing about the good and the bad and try to from each experience. We do want to thank you for your kind words about the front desk and housekeeping and do hope that you enjoyed your time in Chicago.

We do apologize for the confusion in regards to the cart. It is the hotel’s policy that a Bellman be with the cart at all times. We have had several instances where carts have been lost or left in parking garage. We apologize for you receiving the incorrect information and for the miscommunication regarding the cart and that you were not alerted when the cart was dropped off at your door.

We apologize for the manner in which your family was treated regarding foot attire at breakfast. It is a law that everyone must be wearing shoes when food is being served. We will make sure to discuss the correct manner in which to relate this to guests in the future. In regards to our breakfast menu we do have a fair number of guests that stay with us for long periods of time or frequently. Therefore, we attempt to diversify our menu to more than just plain scrambled eggs. If you need a specific type of item please let us know and if possible we are more than willing to make a special item for you or your family.

We hope that you still enjoyed your time in Chicago and hope that you will give the SpringHill Suites brand another chance.

Sincerely,

Vanessa Kosloski

We stayed here for our annual girls trip this past weekend; there were 5 of us and tons of space! We lucked out and had a great corner room on the 19th floor with amazing city views. Comfortable beds, clean, nice decor and awesome staff! From front desk to bellhops and the breakfast crew, everyone was attentive and helpful. Location is awesome, just about a 10 min walk to State St shopping and 15 to Mich Ave. We chose self parking in the attached garage, which was $80 for 2 nights. Only complaint is the elevators, they were a bit finnicky; would go up then stop before your floor or the key card wouldnt work. Overall this was a great stay, best hotel Ive stayed at in Chicago!!

Stayed here from 10/27 thru 11/1. Had a wonderful corner room on 26th floor. Clean, comfortable beds. Great location. Everything is within walking distance. And the bus stops across the street to go up to Second City. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. We toured the city for 5 days and only used public transportation 3 times to go to museums. Wonderful restaurants across the street from hotel. You can take the Blue line from Ohare airport and it stops 3 blocks from hotel. $2.25 per person vs. $45 for a taxi and very easy commute.

Staying in Chicago on business and decided on this hotel for central location. You can walk to all locations on mag mile, Ohio and state st. Comfortable bedding, larger than normal rooms, great Internet. Breakfast had something to be desired. The egg's were awful, rubbery and tasteless.

We had a great stay in chicago! The hotel was very comfortable, with good furnishings. The breakfast was well staffed and kept things full, clean, and organized. Our room was nice sized but i don't like the trend hotels are going to with double beds versus queen beds. Would stay again.

Dobs71,

Thank you so much for your kind words about the SpringHill Suites Chicago Downtown River North. We are so happy that you enjoyed the team members that work the breakfast area. The double/double bed is very common in Chicago but I can understand wanting more space in your bed. We hope to see you if you come back to Chicago!

Sincerely,

I recently stayed at this hotel with 2 friends for a girl's weekend. The room was perfect. It was very modern looking, clean and spacious. The location was perfectly situated to the L and many tourist spots like Michigan Ave shopping and the Art Institute which were within walking distance. There were many good restaurants close to the hotel. Staff was friendly. The hotel free breakfast had variety and was good. The rooms were quiet.
