Due to being very busy with exams, I left booking accommodation for our trip to the last minute. There are few hotels in Dominica and they are typically overpriced and under-serviced. There are however, a number of Eco-type accommodations that have sprung up in the last 5 years (this was our 4th trip to Dominica since 2002). We contacted a number of them on Trip Advisor and we were fortunate enough to connect with Mermaids Secret. Firstly, the price: reasonable - you get a cabin not a room + fresh fruit that you can pick yourself or Tim can help, even coconuts (jelly). The cabin has a fridge freezer and a countertop cooker. There is an outside deck and large grounds to roam the rainforest, forget the mundane swimming pool, they have a river pool of fresh water to swim in and drink. The service: top notch, Tim and his family go above and beyond from beginning to end, they try very hard and this makes a guest feel appreciated. The atmosphere: you are plonked right in the middle of the rainforest - lots of hikes, rivers, waterfalls and countryside Dominican culture (without the harassment of town vendors). It is completely safe and only 40 mins to Roseau or 1hr to the North coast - so a day trip elsewhere is still possible.
If you want to really really get away from it all, want some peace, serenity and friendly warm service, this is the spot to pick. It is an experience you will never forget and leave you happy and refreshed. There is a reason they are ranked #1 in specialty lodging for Dominica.
PS - You will definately want a 4x4! Irie!
