Having been to The Ribeye in the past, I expected a fine dining experience. I knew what to expect, price wise, a bit on the high side but not extravagant. The Ribeye's specialty, of course, is the ribeye steak. It is sold between 8oz-32oz sizes, with the cost going up accordingly. It offers a Salad bar, fresh baked bread, and potato choice with the cost of the meal, in most cases.
The decor is dated and some remodeling is recommended. The black painted, false ceiling tile is sagging in places. The walls are adorned with pictures of Illinois athletic players of the past, with "Illini" lamp shades over some of the tables. Being that the University of Illinois is nearby, it is understandable. The tables are nicely set with cloth napkins and decent silverware.
The Salad bar offers a variety of pre-made salad dishes and the ingredients for a lettuce salad. It is unremarkable, but most choices are fresh and tasty. The steaks we ordered, both ribeyes, were both perfectly cooked to our specifications. The meat was tender and juicy, but not exceptionally flavorful, which would have scored an excellent had it been.
The highlight of our visit was the wait staff. Our waitress was very friendly, helpful and never let our drinks go below half gone. She checked that our meals were cooked per our request and that we had everything we needed. A bright star during our visit.
Overall The Ribeye is a pleasant dining experience to have occasionally. The meal is a bit on the higher side but the whole experience is better then a chain steakhouse. A good place for a date night or after the game.
