“Great Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2014

My husband and I stayed here on our trip to Shawnee National Forest. He read the reviews so we decided to stay here. This was better than the pictures.Very spacious. It was just the two of us, however, if our children came, there was plenty of room for all. We stayed in 4B. Great place. So quiet and peaceful. The deck overlooks the Ohio River. You can watch the barges go down the river. We went during an off season, so the restaurant was not open. Many hiking trails within walking distance of cabin.

My husband and I stopped at the State Park to see the Cave in Rock on a road trip through the National Forest the last weekend in Oct. We decided to eat an early dinner at the State Park restaurant since there were not many choices is the area. Our waitress was a nice young girl who tried very hard to services the whole restaurant on her own as the manager/owner sat at a table chit-chatting with a customer the whole time we were there....which was over an hour and a half. When we received our meals they were not appealing at all and cold. The food tasted horrible: instant mashed potatoes, can vegetables and pre- prepared frozen food. We could not eat our meals. Lucky for us after seeing the cook step out of the kitchen area in her food stained greasy dirty clothing we were glad we did not eat our meals. Save your money, pack a picnic and eat in the park, we wished we did.

The cabins have a great view of the Ohio River, and a balcony you can sit on to look out over it. Alternatively, if is cool and windy (or rain), there is a nice picture window with the same great view. The cabins are a nice, (not five star NYC) and have everything you need. Good air-conditioning/heating, TV, fridge, microwave, lots of space. If you like to watch commercial river traffic, barge traffic was good on the river day and night (very little sound from the barges). Great views and provides easy access to many parts of the Shawnee National Forest area attractions.

The restaurant has limited hours (check to see if their hours fit you schedule). Had breakfast and dinner both very good and reasonable priced with great service. Desserts looked great, but filled to capacity with dinner.

Highly recommend if you are traveling in Southern Illinois. Stay here for a night or two to explore Garden of the Gods, Cave in Rock, Shawnee National Forest, Harden County, the tunnel trail, go antiquing take the ferry to the Kentucky side, local wineries, then head over to the west for more wineries.

Room Tip: Check Lodge Restaurant schedule to match your schedule, or dine elsewhere.

The rooms are clean and well kept. From our porch each morning we watched the river roll past and the wild turkeys eat their breakfast as we enjoyed our morning coffee. The hummingbirds were at hit with us and we could watch them for hours as we enjoyed our breakfast in the restaurant. What a beautiful and relaxing place to stay and enjoy nature at it's finest!

From what we had heard from a friend who stayed a few years back, it sounded like the lodge would be outdated and maybe not so clean. However, we were pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness, spaciousness, room supplies (paper towels, kitchen dishcloths and soap, etc.), freshly painted/papered walls, new bathroom linoleum, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and more! The BEST part was the BEAUTIFUL VIEW of the Ohio River from our own balcony! It was so peaceful, quiet and lovely. Even though the restaurant/main bldg. are only open on Saturday and Sunday, we had cell phone numbers to reach someone at any time for needs. We only had the free internet access up at the main bldg. patio or parking lot during the week...but they said next year they're upgrading to get access in the rooms along w/ new flat screen televisions and new balcony furniture as well. Will definitely go back in the future!

We also liked the location - close to the free ferry that crosses the Ohio over to the Amish community rural stores in Kentucky. It was also a good "home base" every night while being out during the day visiting the local attractions w/ hiking and gorgeous views/sights to see as well as several wineries.

Mattresses aren't the best - but all in all, was a great stay!

Stayed here 2 nights at the end of September. Room was comfortable and clean. Spent both mornings and evenings on the deck enjoying the view. Restaurant was very good and reasonably priced. We plan on staying here again and encourage anyone wanting a quiet, relaxing stay in a beautiful location to do the same.

Room Tip: We stayed in 4B, which was the last cabin in line. A little more private than the other cabins.

We stayed in 3B fantastic view of the Ohio River. Very large room much more than we expected. No plates, etc. microwave coffee and frig is about it. The restaurants hours are limited. But it was a very pleasant experience, so I would say you would not be disappointed. The drive to get there is beautiful drive, just a quaint place to be. Last Ferry on the Ohio River a minutes away.

Room Tip: 3B is all we know sooooo 3B
