“Another lovely stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

This was a return visit to The Grove, our first was a great experience and this followed the same pattern. The welcome is fantastic, the rooms all individual yet equally luxurious and the setting is unique - and it didn't even rain for this visit, in Wales ! Our visits to The Grove are an escape from normal daily life, the overall experience fits with this requirement perfectly, particularly our love of good food - The Grove's restaurant is fantastic, the menu is always special and uses fantastic ingredients, it is wonderful to take a walk around the gardens and see where many of the veg and salad / herb leaves are sourced.
I'm sure we'll be visiting again soon.

For your information, during the spring and summer months we will be carrying out many improvements in the gardens which we hope will make the gardens more of an event all year round.

We were inspired to make a return visit to the Grove by an email offer for returning guests which said they would love to welcome us back.
The two long serving and professional waitresses at breakfast did indeed offer a warm welcome back. The reception and dinner staff were mainly new faces to us but were generally good with a couple of exceptions.

This time we were given the Cwtch room in the long house. It was a pleasant room with a large bathroom and an outdoor seating area.
The first night was fine as there was no one else staying in this building but on the second night I was disturbed several times by the guests above walking across the room to the bathroom. This would only be a problem if you are a light sleeper as I am because my husband slept right through.
It was initially disappointing to see only one chair in a room for two people but this was soon rectified by a member of staff bringing us another one from a different room.
It would also have been useful to have a small table on which to put drinks and magazines and also somewhere to put the soap etc when using the roll top bath.
Our rate included dinner and the food was delicious but in our view is in danger of becoming prettified. Perhaps it's the chef trying too hard for a Michelin star. This was the first time we had eaten in the new dining room which is much more spacious although less intimate than the old smaller panelled one. For our taste the heavily patterned carpet is a bit much as is the mis-match of different framed pictures most of which were for sale.
The second night dinner was not so memorable perhaps because the menu doesn't change. We think more day-to-day variety is needed to persuade guests to dine each night. The two photos from the meal show the starter of mackerel, beetroot and horseradish, all delicious and the dessert (which was less good) of raspberry bavarois, pistachio cake and goats curd. I personally thought the goats curd did not go at all well with it. I asked for some fresh raspberries with it but was told that they only had frozen ones which they crumbled over the dish.
The second night was also beset by internet connection problems. This would not have seemed so bad had it not been for the fact that the receptionist was in denial about there being a fault at all and kept assuring us that it was working for others. That was until three guest couples were talking in the lounge after dinner and all said they were having the same problem.

The breakfasts were delicious and the service perfect.

All in all The Grove is a great place to visit and can be thoroughly recommended.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to put your comments regarding your 2nd stay with us on Tripadvisor. Sorry to hear that you were disturbed by the guests above on your second evening. If you are a light sleeper then we would recommend guests do not choose the Byre or Cwtch which can be affected by a little creaking from the rooms above. Thank you for the suggestions relating to a small table in the bathroom and a second arm chair.

We very much hope to welcome you back to The Grove very soon.

Warm regards,
Neil, Zoe and the Team at The Grove

This is the third time we have stayed in one of the self catering cottages at the Grove and on each occasion it has been excellent. As a base for activities in and around Narberth it is very central and ideally placed. We have eaten at the restaurant in the hotel and the move to a more child friendly menu for little ones completes the package.

This was our third visit and our best yet. We love the Preseli loft with its open beams and the high quality furnishings. Once again nothing was too much trouble and the extra facilities available in the extended house have really added to the experience. Well done for putting a mirror in the room after our comment in our first visit. Our special thanks to Ali for her thoughtfulness and many thanks for the excellent breakfast service. The Grove is a lovely centre to visit local beauty spots and Narberth a jewel in a shopping desert. Our congratulations to the chef, the meal offerings were well thought out and presented, although we, and another couple on our second night, found the mutton rather tough. The prints on display are excellent, but one copy of each please. We booked The Grove for a four day break and wanted to stay somewere which had good food and lovely surroundings. The building has been wonderfully restored and the furnishings are very tasteful and reflect the style of the rooms. The staff were very helpful and we booked in for dinner on two evenings. Breakfast was super and the staff very friendly with lots of ideas for walks etc. Dinner was lovely and every course was a real treat, the only blip was my husband's fish was raw and cold!! This was dealt with quickly and efficently and everything else was superb.
The Blue room was very stylish and we found it very comfortable. The only improvement I could have made was the lighting in the bathroom was terrible for make up, so perhaps a lit mirror would make be helpful.( girly thing I know!)

Room Tip: Bluue room had good views and outside cottages looked very good.

Dear Sharon,

Thank you for taking the time to put your excellent comments on Tripadvisor. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay. As you point out the Blue Room bathroom would benefit from mirror lights as would the Seddon and Poyer Rooms. We have a programme of work to redecorate all our rooms and cottages and these lighting issues are gradually being put right. The blue room will be redecorated in the Autumn.

We very much hope to see you again very soon.

Kind regards
Neil and Zoe

I guess I'm not unusual in posting a review following either a good or bad experience; it's hardly worth the effort for a three-star rating. The Grove thoroughly deserves a good review. I can appreciate a recent reviewer found faullt - is anywhere perfect? - but one star...? when all the other reviews are so glowing...?
Okay, our towel rail wasn't working, but it didn't matter, and in context of everything else, should I mark it down? No, because there was so much to like about The Grove: the comfortable, delightfully proportioned public rooms; the attentive and yet not obsequious staff; the classy in-period decor - even of the new parts; the restaurant with lots of room around each table; the library area for board games or reading; the sylvan setting; the complimentary tea and Welsh cakes on arrival (for St.David's Day) and so forth.
Yes, it is expensive, but at least here you can see why - there's a high staff ratio, the bedrooms and bathrooms are extremely well, and thoughtfully, appointed etc.
I appreciate that my two stand-out positives may not be universal. One was that I was thrilled by the total lack of signage throughout. There were no dictatorial signs in the bedroom or bathroom telling me what I should or should not do. There was not even a name or number on the bedroom door - just so refreshing for a holiday. The other was being played, quite quietly, some Joni Mitchell at breakfast. Someone has taste as well as style!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to put your great comments on Tripadvisor. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay. Its reassuring to hear that you liked the fact that we avoid unnecessary signage particularly in rooms. This is a conscious decision for us to ensure the Grove feels more like a home from home rather than a hotel. Breakfasts would not be the same without a little bit of Jodie Mitchell!

There is one bathroom towel rail not working and that is in the Derwen room. This is scheduled to be dealt with shortly.

We very much hope to see you again very soon.

Kind Regards
Neil and Zoe

,,,,, and that was that we only had one night there. But it was a perfect one nighter and one we hope to repeat before too long. We loved EVERYTHING about The Grove, it was all fabulous. Starting with Zoe's patience when I was booking; I was desperate to find the perfect room and she was so helpful. I think we did have the best room in the end, Grassholm, with it's double aspect, beautiful views, sumptious bed and gorgeous bathroom but I have to admit to having a peek at other rooms too and they all looked fab.
The staff were all all lovely with a special mention for Ali, the welcome was warm, the fires blazing, the atmosphere cosy, the food and wine were superb, the location was gorgeous and of course the company made it totally awesome.
Could it get any better?
Well yes!
A longer stay!
