“Olde worlde charm - shame about the cell block rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

The main building itself is beautiful, with beams, large open fire in the bar area, but the accomodation is unfortunately in a separate modern-looking building totally out of character with the rest of the hotel. The rooms themselves, at least the singles, are small though perfectly adequate for a single night but one real gripe was that the TV was clamped to the wall in such a position that it could only be seen while sitting on the end of the (single) bed - there was no easy chair which would have been a welcome addition to the furnishings. And in the "wet room" there was nowhere except the closed toilet to put toiletries! Who designs these places! In our case we had to several times call the staff over to replace missing lightbulbs and toilet paper, and lock the door to the adjoining room, which is all frankly annoying. On the plus side, a comfortable nights sleep, very reasonable price and a nice English breakfast in the main building. I would definitely stay again.

As a first time visitor to the venue and having been told good things (mostly) about the food, I was quite excited. The bar area as you arrive is quite open, but welcoming - it starts to go downhill from there. Service at the bar was slow and patchy.
When we were taken to our table, it turned out to be in a private room (The Garden Room) - there was one big table set for the 20 of us, with no attempt at any festive table decorations apart from some cheap looking Christmas crackers. The room itself was pleasant, but very cold initially again with no real attempt to make it look warm and festive.
Service for the food was quick, but consisted mainly of young staff bringing in plates and asking "Seafood Assiette anyone?" - the starters were fresh, but the "Assiette" consisted of a few prawns, a bit of smoked salmon and a bit of smoked mackerel pate - very modern cuisine!
The food itself was OK, but certainly not of the standard I would have expected for the reputation the White Hart claims.
Service was poor, with the young staff not coping well either with large groups, or the Christmas spirit - one of our party politely asked one of our waitresses if there was any white wine, to be told "Yeah it's at the other end of the table"
I'm sure that outside of the hectic Christmas season, the restaurant and staff are very capable of dealing with whatever is thrown at them.
I would certainly not go back by choice.

We took my elderly partially sighted mother for an early Christmas lunch. We had booked a table in the window for the light, which they had organised. Service was attentive from the moment we arrived. The seafood starter was beautifully arranged on the slate and equally tasty. The three of us had the Braintree turkey (what else?) which was full of flavour and served in a rich gravy with a full range of vegetables. The only puzzle was the Yorkshire pudding - we're from Yorkshire - but my mother said that is increasingly common down south with any meat! Lovely range of puddings, once again beautifully presented. A really good value and tasty meal with exceptional service. We'd certainly book again.

This is our third trip to the White Hart and it never disappoints. Amazing food, good service followed by late night relax in front of the open roaring fire.
A 1 minute stroll to your room, which has been decorated to a high standard with comfy beds.

The following morning is served with a late cooked breakfast with fresh fruit and juices.

This is a great overnight break, I cant wait to come back. Excellent value for money and one we tell all our friends about, thank you to Hayley and her staff

Where do I begin? We were a family party of ten celebrating my 65th and my daughter's 40th birthday. We had preordered our meals one week in advance as requested. It was very quiet for a Saturday night, just us and a party of four in the restaurant all evening. Despite the lack of custom, service was very slow. We ordered a bottle of champagne on arrival which was eventually served warm twenty minutes later. The 3 vodka martinis had to be sent back because they were just not drinkable. The food although pretty to look at ranged from tepid to cold and in one case uncooked, and was way below an acceptable standard. Despite our preordering, the menu was changed in some instances without informing us. The staff were a bunch of kids clearly unable to cope with the situation and although a the bill was reduced by a considerable sum, our evening had been spoiled. I understand that things sometimes go wrong but this establishment has little to commend it and ours was certainly a Fawltey Towers experience.

A lovely building which houses the bar and restaurant, the rooms are in a modern annexe nearby, the bedrooms are being refurbished at the moment. We too were on a Secret Escapes deal wonderful value for money, 6 course Dinner, a glass of champagne, bed and breakfast for £126. The food was a feast for the eyes and the tastebuds - the petit fours (we just had to eat them although we were full) - included a mini baked alaska - unbelievable ! Delicious rolls are baked fresh every day, my favourite one was the tomato plait. The bacon at breakfast was full of flavour, I had the homemade yogurt, a wonderful consistency, with fresh chopped strawberries at the bottom - well done to Kevin and his assistants ! All the staff were polite and very helpful - the offer we had has now finished, but do contact the hotel as they do their own offers from time to time. Looking forward to going back !

This was our first visit to this part of the country and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The building was superb, the staff were very, very friendly and helpful, well led by the front of house Manager, Hayley who was tireless in her efforts to please. We were amazed to see previous reviews 'knocking' the staff, the cleanliness of the place and incredibly the quality of the food. We feel a Michelin Star cannot be far away if the chef(s) regularly achieve the standard of food we experienced. By nature of a 6 course menu the portions were obviously not huge but the taste of the food and the richness of the accompanying sauces were something very special and more than ample in quantity. Drinks were very reasonably priced and the accommodation was more than adequate for a night's stay. There is a refurbishment programme currently under way although I mistakenly thought that the room in which we stayed had already been done!! Breakfast was as good as we have had anywhere. Obviously there are some people that are very hard to please! Where else can two people get a superb 6 course meal with accompanying drinks, Champagne, lovely open fire to sit and relax by, a comfortable warm room and a great breakfast for around £100.
