Wanting to get a more authentic experience, I Googled searched Best Authentic Mexican Restaurants in the Chicagoland area today and saw that the only restaurant near the suburbs was Xni Pec restaurant. So we decided to check it out this evening and give it a chance. Upon entering, we were immediately turned off by how uncomfortably hot it was inside the restaurant. We chose a table away from the direct sunlight, but quickly realized it was very dirty. The waitress came over and did clean it, but we really did not appreciate her spraying all the cleaners around us, especially since the restaurant was nearly empty and someone could have cleaned it for new guests arriving.
Regardless to the immediate problems, we decided to give this place a chance as it was recommended by Chicago Magazine as a top contender. Sometimes guests may overlook a few negatives if the food is really good. However, when the waitress brought us our waters and appetizer plates, we instantly saw very dirty dinnerware such as large chunks of food stuck to our cups and plates. The water had no ice.
We ordered 2 drinks, a sangria and a margarita which were good, What was interesting was that they were served in non-traditional cups - old fashioned tin cups.We didn't get it...these were not the same drinks pictured on their Facebook page! My sangria was primarily ice.
We ordered an appetizer to share which were the empanadas. After a quick tasting, my spouse and I gave each other a look and knew that it was time to leave. Each empanada was supposed to have a different filling (mushroom/corn, chorizo, ground beef), but really all that it tasted like was old corn meal filler that was bland and overly fried. The dipping sauce appeared to have stayed in a fridge all day with its hardened top. It did nothing to spice up the dish. Also on the plate was a pile of diced tomatoes. Not sure what we were supposed to do with that.
The waitress seemed very surprised when we asked for the check which was a whopping 25.00 for 2 mediocre drinks and a terrible appetizer. Not worth the money!
We came home and immediately wrote this review as there was only 1 other TripAdvisor review which was positive. Another online reviewing system also gave this restaurant 4 out of 5 stars...and frankly, we just didn't get all the positive feedback.
Stay away from this place. After such a disappointing experience, we went to another local Mexican inspired restaurant and were pleased with good food, a beer, and a clean experience all for the same 25.00 charge.
