“Really nice hotel and an excellent location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

The hotel itself is really nice. The bungalows are quite comfy and spacious, but the best thing is the location. The rainforest is impresive and the hotel private beach is perfect. It's almost deserted and really big so you can walk and walk.
Service was ok, nothing extrordinary, but nothing bad also.
The restaurant has really good food, but the plates are very small so make sure you don't forget some starters.

We booked our four night stay in Port Douglas at this lovely resort through an on-line broker once we'd arrived in Sydney. The savings were considerable, even with the already lower shoulder season rates. We easily rented a car at Cairns and the one hour drive to Thala Beach was scenic. From the lodge one can take a shuttle ($8 pp ) or cab ($50 one way) into town but we were happy to have a car. I can add little to other reviewers' remarks about the accommodations- spacious, clean, comfortable. Except for breakfast (fine) we ate off-site. Staff friendly and helpful. Chatting with a groundskeeper provided a wealth of info. Unfortunately, rain prevented our taking nature walks, but we enjoyed the lobby photo gallery of local sightings. Highly recommended.

Recently spent 5 nights at the lodge. The location was beautiful. However the service in the dining room was than stellar and was not what I expected at a 5 star resort. Found the menu intriguing but somewhat limited for a longer stay. If you don't have your own car you are limited to a shuttle that comes 4 times a day and returns 4 times a day from Port Douglas. The times were not that convenient for our schedule. The round trip into town is $16 AUS per person. Most tours do pick up and drop off at the lodge. I am afraid they are resting on their location and need to pick up the service level. We did find the front desk and adventure desk staff helpful.

We went to Thala Lodge as part of a Queensland Rain package which included three nights at Thala Lodge with a full breakfast included. The design of the lodge is very good and considers the natural landscape. We loved walking to breakfast along the pathways and also at night with the solar lights guiding us along the way.We are over 65 years of age and had no problems. The buggies will come and get you if you want to take it easy. The main building is impressive and we both loved the open air feel and dining in the fresh air without getting sunburnt. Some changes to the quality of the ingredients would make the menu much more appealing. I thought the prices were a bit too high for the dinner menu and the quality of the food was not commensurate with what was being asked for each course.
Overall a very well organised venue and the nature and bird observation walk with David was the highlight of the three days.

Room Tip: If you like the beach ask for a room on the hillside close to the water

Stayed four nights based on the recommendations on Trip Advisor. The descriptions are accurate with the bungalows spacious, private and well presented. Very clean and well maintained with well appointed bathroom facilities. People with mobility issues should not be put off staying here. The staff will collect you from your bunglaow in an electric buggy and convey you around the resort. The beach bar is a geat touch and perfect for a sunset stroll on the beach prior to dinner. The staff are fantastic and extremely helpful. We ordered mud crab for dinner (24 hr notice required) and were extremely impressed wit the the effort the staff went to, including a personal visit from the Chef, to ensure we had a memorable dinner. The food is delicious and, I believe, reasonably priced. The wine list is a little pedestrian with only main stream variatels available. We found this a common theme throughout the area. Views from the restaurant are stunning. I recommend a leisurely lunch to watch the antics of the birdlife and other fauna that abound around the restaurant. We will definately return to this resort.

This review is long overdue but better late than never. I hadn't realized that our travel agent booked us all inclusive as I usually don't like to do that but this was well worth it. We had a dozen (sometimes two), oysters at every lunch and dinner to start and they were out of this world. The menu was expansive so you weren't stuck with the same selections everyday and the food was absolutely delicious. The breakfast buffet was quite large and had something for everyone. They have a pretty good wine list too. I believe that the one staff member who waited on us most of the time was Dan and he was awesome!

Dining under the huge palapa was so beautiful and so peaceful watching the birds in the tree "shower" was fun and gazing at the enormous golden orb spiders in their webs was quite a site.

The rooms are nice and clean but our balcony door didn't have a screen which would be nice so you could leave the door open at night instead of having to sleep with the air conditioner on. Would have left it open but we tried that and our ceiling had a few geckos attached to it within a few minutes so we opted out on the fresh air idea.

Loren Norton was great helping out with planning excursions and she also made sure that we had sandwiches packed to go on our last morning as we had to depart for the airport before the breakfast buffet started. Thank you Loren!

We would highly recommend this resort especially for couples!

Room Tip: The Coral Sea Bungalows have a great view and also get a nice breeze.
