“Truly sweet (re)treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2012

We travelled for 3 weeks in the Caribbean, and stayed on St.Lucia, Canouan and finally Bequia.
In Bequia we stayed in the Sweet Retreat for 6 days with owners Robert and Shelby.
Next to the very nice location overlooking Admiralty Bay from the Lower Bay area, in the quiet far corner of the leeward side of the island, they offered us a very relaxing and personal stay.
Robert was our encyclopedia on what went on on the island, and who to contact for what (e.g. Ramblers hiking with Donahan for a great 5 hour hike on the southern part of the island, passing the blow hole natural geiser and the summit of mount Paget). Shelby was a wonderful cook using only organic ingredients resulting in for example the most fabulous brownie/espresso ice cream dessert we enjoyed so far.
If you are looking for a nice, small scale accommodation with a very personal touch, we would highly recommend The Sweet Retreat!

We travel to the Caribbean every year and never have we found such wonderful hosts, great views from large clean rooms, and excellent food. Shelby's creations are absolutely amazing - simple yet delicious. Robert and Shelby really go out of their way to make your stay personalized and wonderful. They recognize that we are there to be "away" from the craziness of life and they truly help that come true. This property is literally steps from one of the best beaches on Bequia. If you are planning on visiting Bequia, you must try this place out. You will love it! I can continue the review but it feels like the other guests have already said it all and I wholeheartedly agree with them. Kudos to Robert and Shelby who provide an affordable yet luxurious getaway geared to allow you to relax, have fun and enjoy the local Caribbean flavors.

Room Tip: Every room has a great view

Our recent stay at Sweet Retreat was our first visit to Bequia - and after talking with other visitors, there is no doubt that Sweet Retreat is the truly the gem of Bequia. The setting is idyllic. And the owners, Robert and Shelby, as other reviews have praised, are truly the most kind and generous hosts you will ever encounter. Their attention to detail made our stay there very memorable indeed. We are already booked to return next year! Situated on a small hill only a minutes walk to Lower Bay (the best beach on the island) the Sweet Retreat also has views to die for. The view from our balcony was stunning and each night we enjoyed having a cocktail there while enjoying the changes in the evening skies. With only 4 rooms, each completely sheltered from other guests with your own private balcony, the rooms are a good size with a beautiful bed covered in mosquito netting (we quite enjoyed going into our 'tent' at night but never encountered any mosquitos!), a small fridge, a safe, big ceiling fans (no a/c is needed) and a gorgeous big bathroom with hot water. The main level of this villa used to be a bar called Coco's, but now it is just a restaurant for guests, with a great space to sun in hammocks, and a lovely sitting area for breakfasts and dinners. Meals at Sweet Retreat are quite special, as Shelby is a fabulous chef and Robert is happy to bring in your favourite wine by request. Only guests at Sweet Retreat can dine there which means there are never more than 8 people dining at a time, and the prices are sweet too - only $30US for a 4 course dinner. We definitely had some of the best meals on the island right there, from the fresh fish to Shelby's special chicken crusted with hummus, to the breadfruit appetizer (to die for!) with her spicy sauce, to the fresh avocado salad, mostly picked right out of their garden. And breakfasts (included in the price of your stay) are again, delectable, with Shelby making fresh muffins daily (my husband especially enjoyed the sausage and cheese muffins!) and fresh picked fruit salad and fresh squeezed juice. . The 'restaurant' is only open to guests, so you will never have more than 8 people dining, which makes every meal very romantic and special. While Shelby is tucked away creating magic in the kitchen, Robert takes care of guests with a wonderful style. He is always around and available to help plan your day, or arrange taxis, and his meal service is impeccable. For quiet guests he simply gives you what you need and disappears, however if you want to chat - you will enjoy learning more about the island from Robert, who is well-known and well-liked by everyone on the island. With a great sense of humour and great story telling abilities - he is the perfect host. And the few times we caught Shelby out of the kitchen, you see what a great couple they are and how very much they love their life - and love sharing this beautiful island with their guests. Other pluses are that the Sweet Retreat is near a great reef (a few minutes walk down the beach) and Robert supplies all snorkelling gear at no charge. We snorkelled every day. And minutes away on Lower Bay Beach are three bar/restaurants if you want to dine on the beach. They also have a 'house taxi' driver by the name of Lenci, who is a sweetheart, and will give you a wonderful island tour. Whatever time you need him, Lenci is there on time, day or night. If you visit Bequia you must spend time at the Sweet Retreat for a truly special Bequian experience.

Room Tip: All rooms are equally beautiful. The lower yellow rooms have less stairs to climb (if that is an is...

We have been to Bequia several times over the years and love it .Apart from its beauty , as in all things in life , it's the people who make it and Bequia is full of really gracious and delightful people ,none more so than the recent incumbents of what used to be Coco's , Robert and Shelby. They have created the perfect Carrabean hideaway, high above the Lower Bays glorious beach, with a bit of extra luxury thrown in.Its like staying with friends at a country house in the the Carrabean . Robert , not only is a wonderful host , seemingly absolutely nothing is too much trouble, but he's also an immensely interesting man and Shelby has invented a fusion of Louisiana /West Indian cuisine, simply the best food to be had on the island (before you die you have to devour her bread fruit chips with a hot spicy dip! ).If you want boutique ,hotel , chic , contact your bank manager and go to Mustique . If you want the grace and flavour of magical West Indies life , stay on Bequia at the Sweet Retreat.

This retreat could be described by many names but on my most recent visit to the island my stay at Sweet Retreat would be best described as "Wonderful"! Having read some of the reviews bring back fond memories: scrumptious breakfast muffins, exceptional view, gracious hosts and great location! This was my third trip to Bequia. I have tried most restaurants on the island and I can sincerely say that Shelby's cuisine "Reigns Supreme"! If you are planning a trip to Bequia, don't miss the opportunity of discovering this wonderful place.

The Sweet Retreat is just that SWEET. Shelby and Robert are one of the most gracious and accommodating hosts I have ever experienced in my travels. Our breakfast of scrumptious muffins, juice, coffee and fresh fruit each morning was one of the highlights of our stay. A great way to plan for the day and Robert was always willing to set up adventures for us! It was a delight to hear stories of island life, so well told by Robert. We all loved the option to dine for lunch or dinner and we did so three times during our stay and we were never disappointed. Shelby can cook and I still crave the bread fruit appetizer with Cajun aioli. The view from the balcony highlighted our dining experiences. Great food and a perfect atmosphere.

The lower bay beach, which is just a short, steep walk was a wonderful beach with great snorkeling. Of course, Sweet Retreat had free snorkeling gear which made it so easy to enjoy an entire day on the beach. They would even pack a cooler for you with water, beer, sodas, and lunch if you wanted and would make sure you had beach chairs for relaxing.

We hope to return, as this was a most memorable vacation due in part to Robert and Shelby's kind and warm hospitality and the beauty of Bequia.

Room Tip: All the rooms were very nice, as we occupied three of the four.

With only four rooms we felt we had our own Chateau with a servant and a chef, whom always looked after us. Served us drinks and delicious food whenever we wanted. They helped us to book taxi pickup from the ferry, a roundtrip on the island and water taxi. I must say Robert and Shelby run a genuine and environmental establishment. It’s listed under bed and breakfast here in trip advisor, but according to myself it should be listed under Hotel.

We had booked the Green room, and the view over Admiralty Bay was breathtaking. The pictures on the web where according to reality, which happens not to often.
No rooms have telephone or TV, and are decorated in a rustic way. Breakfast, lunch and dinner (breakfast included in the room price, so was also tax) were served on the veranda, inside or outside. The settings were very colourful with every detail thought of. Everything served bought locally, and fantastic prepared by Shelby. I think it is impossible to get fresher fish, fruit or vegetables in any other place here.

If you like football on TV, air-condition, and a crowd in the bar, this is not the place for you.
If you want soft music in the background, personal service, a tranquil atmosphere close to nature at it’s best. Then you should select the Sweet Retreat.
I have stayed at hotels with better food, higher standards, big pools, better situated, etc. Altogether, this is the best hotel we ever stayed in, my wife and I, during our forty years of travel. And for a fraction of the cost we normally pay.
