“Dirty and cold. Paint was peeling!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2007

We were not happy with our stay. On that Sunday, room #4 was rented (just for the day) to a large group (20 or so) of Hispanic folks. They were having a huge party in the Hotel's hot pools. When they were done in the pools, they were running and roaming through the upstairs rooms stealing towels and whatever they could find. The rooms are left unlocked, and are almost impossible to lock/unlock with the keys provided. Some kids and their dad walked in on us! Were were sitting around our room reading.

They also filled up the upstairs bathrooms to shower and change. I couldn't go to the restroom! And they didn't leave until late (around 11 pm). They left a huge mess that we had to wade though the next morning. Where was the management? There was no consideration for the overnight guests.

The rooms are very small, cold and drafty, and the ceiling was cracked and the paint peeling! The front desk gal was about 18 and had about 5 of her guy friends hanging around the desk area that first night. She acted 'bothered' by us for asking how to get more towels.

We stayed at the Inn for a night after driving from Salt Lake City. Contrary to what others have written, the room and hall bathroom were quite clean. Management was helpful, breakfast was OK, and the mineral pools were hot and soothing. All in all, the place is old and a bit funky. We didn't have great expectations, so we weren't really disappointed with the accommodations.

However, and it's a big however, our room was on the river side of the Inn and therefore also on the railroad side. It was a hot night and there was no air conditioning, just a ceiling fan, so we left our window open. The trains started passing sometime in the middle of the night, blowing their whistles 9 times as they passed through town. Even earplugs couldn't stop us from bolting awake each time the whistle blew. It was torture. Toward morning it got cool enough to close the double-pane window, which barely muffled the sound. After the sun rose, we didn't hear another train.

We got breakfast and lots of coffee and got out of there as soon as we could.

Too bad about the trains. Lava Hot Springs is a cute little town.

After reading other reviews, I decided to call the property and express concerns over some negative feedback. I was assured that we would enjoy our stay, and was asked to speak up if we encountered any problems. When we pulled off the road, we were pleased to see the inn was RIGHT on the Portneuf River, and the whole town and all the visitors had turned out for a parade down the main street. We stayed in the main building, which is old, but is in a beautiful setting. The pools are absolutely clean and clear, and are open to the public for a fee, but were never crowded. The river flows right thru the middle of town, back and forth under little bridges, and people tube down it, get out, walk right back up the main street and jump in again.
Breakfast was very good, served buffet style, with an egg dish, pancakes, hashbrowns, fresh fruit, cereal, milk, juice, coffee, as much as you wanted and freshly prepared.
We spent hours in the pools, which were very clean and surrounded by trees, grass and flowers, soaking and meeting other people. The staff was friendly and helpful, although not always available. Now for the bad...the kitchen/dining area is in an extremely smelly basement. You can grab your breakfast and eat elsewhere on the property. The walls of our room were NOT clean. The bathrooms (4 per floor, 6 or 8 guestrooms per floor) were clean enough, although they also had an old, damp smell. Most of the problems we had could be easily and quickly resolved if staff did some THOROUGH cleaning and opened the basement windows!! However, we did enjoy the pools, the setting, and the breakfast so much, we chose to stay another night on our return trip to Washington. The little town is very charming, and, if you are prepared for somewhat less than spotless accomodations, you will have a great time!

We booked the "Blue House" for a two night stay. For $393 we did not get ANYTHING we asked for. We were told we'd have a roll-away bed but it never showed up and when we asked about it we were told they didn't have one. The kitchen was totally unequipped--the refridgerator doesn't even have a handle on the door. We decided to stay anyway and started looking for a place for our 14 year old son to sleep. When we looked under the cushions of the couch we found mouse droppings (and a half eaten dog snack). When we went to the front desk to ask to be let out of our reservation we were told that we'd have to wait an hour or two for the owner to call us back. After threatening to call the county health department we were given our money back and we left as quickly as our feet would take us.

Oh, and private pools?? No! There is a sign at the entrance that says it's open to the public for a fee.

We stayed at the Inn last year. The pools were awesome. We loved our breakfasts. The rooms were ok. We knew there wouldn't be a turn down service. You can get that if you ask. We preferred to keep it how we wanted for the few days we were there.

The trouble came when we were accused by an owner of sneaking people into the pool when for sure, we would never think of doing such a thing. It happened the morning after our first night there. We would be there two more nights, so we felt uncomfortable staying there after that. We had shared at arrival that we had a family reunion and
family would be staying in different locations in Lava. When some unruly college kids crashed the pools late in the night, we were blamed just because our family had the same hair color as the perpetrators. We were actually in the pools when the boys in question
came with their loudness into the pools. We know for sure it wasn't our family. We were insulted because we are good people from a good family who goes by the rules.

Then to make matters worse, one owner gave us a deal over the phone and at their word, we checked in only to find out that the other owner would not honor the price given by the first. It was too late to find other lodging so we ended up paying around $100 more for the rooms. Watch this and get price confirmation by e-mail at least when booking ahead by phone. You may need the proof. It was not worth the emotional trauma when all we wanted was to get away from our busy lives, not be on the set of Days of Our Lives in Lava Hot Springs.

Stay away from this place. The room is overpriced. To get your own toilet, you have to cough up $40 extra. The "staff" don't turn down the rooms like a reputable hotel would. The TV reception is horrible, and guess what? you're getting up to change the channel by hand since none of the remote controls work.

My room had about 3 feet of toilet paper and I had to ask for more.

The "breakfast" resembles what you'd eat when your 15 year old nephew makes breakfast for you and 10 others.

I got the impression that the ownership/management has recently changed, so maybe this place will improve, but bank on this - they'll never get another penny of my money.

We have stayed at Lava Hot Springs Inn several times over the years as we live in Idaho Falls, a 1-1/2 hour drive. It's a nice get away. However, we will not be spending the nights in the hotel anymore.

We love the staff, the atmosphere and pools. You can even bring your pets if you want! It's very laid back and low key. We have come several times a year just to swim in the pools and opt not to stay.

The continental breakfast has always been great, love the eggs and hash browns as well as the friendly cook.

The down side of the whole experience is the maintanence of the rooms! I haven't been impressed with any of the them and I have no desire to stay over night in any of them again! The beds have always been very uncomfortable. The bedding looks worse than the linens and comforters I throw out. For a few extra dollars you could buy a higher threadcount in a sheet that will wash many more times without balling up and being scratchy. It is a savings in the long run! Also, the pillows were really flat, how old are they? (I was scared to look.) When we stayed in the room with the bathroom across the hall for 89.99 a night, we didn't even get towels! I also wish they had bathrobes to walk out to the pools in, especially in the cold winters. Anyway..all of this is so dissapointing as I really love this place!

SO...If you want to sleep comfortably, find a place with better beds and linens. If that doesn't bother you, pay the expensive price for the room, bring your own bedding and pillows, and enjoy the rest of the experience!

  • Liked — The pools give a quiet atmosphere, very romantic and fun. They are soaking pools only, not great for kids.
  • Disliked — Uncomfortable beds and no towels
