“Immaculate, relaxing and welcoming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

We received a warm welcome from the lovely Sara (Customer Relations) who took us for a quick tour around the hotel and then on to our spacious and comfortable room. We are having a wonderful time here at the Excelsior. We usually stay at the Bauer (San Marco) but this makes a refreshing change with the beach on your doorstep. We can simply pop over to Venice (San Marco) on the courtesy boats which are free of charge and run every 30 mins......perfect!!,

The Excelsior is a first class hotel both in terms of its accomodation and a marvelous beach - possibily the best I ever been to in Europe - fantastic space, clean beautifully clear water. Somewhat strange is the existence of Cabanas stretching the entire length of the beach instead of normal chairs and umbrellas. Be warned that these are expensive to rent each day and so must be factored into the daily cost of the room. However the highlight of our stay was the quality of the staff. Sara in Guest Services was an outstanding professional who dealt with any issues swiftly, courteously and with a fabulous smile. Given the disruption of the Venice Film Festival she ensured that any inconvenience was countered with an alternative. The concierges too were outstanding, nothing too much trouble and full of helpful advice. The design of the hotel both in terms of public spaces, corridors and rooms are stylish without being garish. Will I go back - absolutely! My only criticism is a somewhat chaotic breakfast service when the hotel was full. However the staff there were quick to respond when this was pointed out.

If you decide to stay at the Lido (thus experiencing a totally different Venice experience), this is the place to choose.

I loved being right on the (very well kept) beach.

Please be aware that the trip to the Venice centre is quite long, and public transportation is not easily accessible (there is a free hotel shuttle, however) -- this hotel is ideal if you just want to relax, but it is not convenient if you plan to visit Venice's attractions!

Mostly ordinary people stay here and it is an impressive if delapidated building, but the service is bad and everything is overpriced. This was the sixth 5 star hotel we stayed at after a two week tour and was easily the worst. As we checked in to our suite, a charming old American was saying that he had been coming there for 20 years but now it had gone down with basic facilitIes missing and gross overcharging, he was sadly too polite to complain while he was there so we did it for him. No shampoo no toilet rolls, bathrobes walking off, charged for drinks not had, rude waiters, no iron and no kettle, the excuse being that it was against fire regulations, I told one of several fawning managers that this was a lie and they admitted it - all complaints were addressed but too little too late. The beach cabana at 170 euros was actually okay with a sea view, but God only knows why they charge 120 euros for cabins with no view - yes I do know - idiots will actually pay for them - Emperor's new clothes syndrome. Having to tell people how to run a hotel is embarrasing and spoilt our holiday, we ate out after being fraudulently ripped off at lunch in spite of promises to wine and dine us at their expense etc I pointed out that it was not the cash but the basic lack of profesionalism. most people are to frightened to complain. We slated them and walked never to return. The authorities will be contacting them about certian illegal infringmenets of EU law regarding weights and measures, pricing, lack of publicly obligatorily displayed information and basic lies about fire regulations etc.

Room Tip: front view rooms are great but the lack of service spoils the day, you do not want to complain when...

Celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary, we decided to treat ourselves to a little luxury in beautiful Venice. We arrived late (1am) due to a flight delay but the reception staff were efficient and friendly which was perfect after a stressful journey. The hotel porter showed us directly to our room and it was a relief to let someone else take the load. Room: Medium sized, very clean and good standard of decoration, we could not stretch to a premium room but the standard is good enough although lacking a view. Bathroom: excellent with all the usual amenities plus an excellent shower. A welcome bonus is the walk-in dressing room which offers plenty of accessible unpacking and dressing space. Overall, a good start as a base for exploring Venice.

The hotel is lovely and the staff friendly and helpful. Bar and restaurant prices similar to St Marc's Square, but you expect that with the level of comfort offered at this location. The beach is a little disappointing as it is currently covered with workmen erecting marquees for the coming Film Festival ( I should have read up on the dates before booking). But this has not otherwise detracted from the stay.

The hotel water shuttle service to St Marc's Sq is a fantastic bonus. Experience the history, excitement, romance and beauty and then, just as the tourist cattle market all starts to get a little hot, hectic and stressful, stroll up to the hotels own jetty right on the square and board your own private taxi direct to your hotel - what luxury! And what a journey! we still haven't tired of it.

The maid service is very efficient and friendly and worth a special mention. Our room is invariably fresh and clean whenever we return but they are never under your feet. Breakfast is also very good with a large selection of options to help start the day on the right foot.

Overall, we are addicted and already planning our return.

We chose the Excelsior to celebrate our Ruby Wedding anniversary, after enjoying an evening meal about 2 years ago which made us decide to stay for a week for the above celebration. We arrived on Sunday evening, 18th, said why we were here an asked if it was possible to have a sea view room. Unfortunately there was an extra charge so we decided to stay in the allocated room. It was beautifully clean and very well presented - but no tea/coffee making facilities, no iron, no trousers press which really isn't 5-star quality. Monday we stayed by the pool. Tuesday it rained so went into Venice. Wednesday morning made our way to the swimming pool to be greeted by a workman who said "pool closed". Went to reception to ask how long the pool would be closed and they said until after the Venice Film Festival! Asked why, and we were handed a letter telling us that the pool was closed and if we went to the reservation desk by the beach, we would be looked after free of charge. Also the letter stated a 20% discount on food in the restaurant. Not only was the pool closed, the gym was closed as was the snack bar around the pool. By this time many more guests were at reception asking the same thing, they were not told the facilities would be closed, neither is it on the web site. Things were getting pretty heated because reception staff and especially the lady on the reservation desk by the beach (who was downright rude), We asked to see the Manager. He was busy. By this time we were all at the reception desk by the beach and the receptionist was adamant we were not getting a free Cabanna. They would provide a bed and umbrella on the beach for us for free!!! We said that is not acceptable, we have paid in full for the facilities we required, i.e. direct access to the beach from the pool, a gym, a snack bar around the pool and to expect us to go and lie on the sand for the full day was ridiculous. They said we could pay for a Cabanna at a reduced rate! By now the manager still hadn't arrived and my husband went back to reception and eventually the hotel Director joined us. Again explained that the pool was closed because of the Venice Film Festival...... so? By now there were a lot of angry guests and we said we wanted a Cabanna, free of charge for the rest of our stay and we wanted them now. We asked him how did he expect his guests who had paid literally thousands of pounds to stay there to go and be staked out on the beach after paying for the facilities they advertise and yet do not fulfil their obligations? He had to capitulate and said we could have a Cabanna. So, while they were being allocated we were still told by the lady on reception that we had to pay! Got the hotel Director to confirm we did NOT have to pay. We were treated like second-lass citizens, They took our money in full and didn't care what happened to their clients after that - because of the Venice Film Festival! During Wednesday scaffolding was being erected around the pool and more scaffolding was being erected on the beach - in full view of the terrace dining area. And as the week went on, more and more construction work was being carried out which obviously made it very noisy. (but which make interesting photographs for the claim we will be making). Even to the end of the holiday,no apology was given, no-one was offered anything in compension. My husband and son had used the gym on the first day but then were told to go to an annexe further along the road - which was actually also closed on that day.
On our arrival, we had booked our anniversary dinner with the restaurant manager who sat down with us and we said we would like a bottle of Prosecco with our family before dinner and he said he would sort out a separate table for us and have it all prepared. When we came to the Terrace on the Friday, no table had been set up, the manager who we had sat with and discussed this studiously ignored us, we had to have our Prosecco with dinner! and still no word of congratulation! The wine we ordered for dinner seemed to take a long time to arrive, only to be told they had run out of that one and "had to go somewhere to get it". And every excuse made was because of the "Venice Film Festival". When we came to pay our bill the day before check-out, no discount had been made for our evening meal and when we asked for the discount, we were greeted with "what discount". Fortunately we kept the letter we had been given and then we got the discount! Absolute disgrace. We really felt that the Management were not interested in their clients unless you were spending money and believe me, you could spend a fortune in this hotel, the food and beverage prices are exhorbatent. Many guests we spoke to all ate elsewhere. We paid in full before we arrived, so we expected the facilities advertised to be available and as they were not, we will be writing to the management/owership of the hotel for financial compensation and will continue to do so until we get it and will certainly never stay there again.

I don't even know where to begin. We booked and pre-payed our stay at Hotel Excelsior far in advance, so I was chocked when a reservation clerk called me and told me that they had cancelled our last to nights, because of VIP guests arriving, and that it was a matter of security. We had booked two rooms and bought plane tickets from Denmark, arranged pick-up in the airport and so forth. Everything in advance as we are traveling with 4 little children. The Excelcior offered us different other hotel options (none in the Excelsior price range) for the last two nights, but what a hassle to pack and move in the middle of a vacation. Also, none of the other hotels had a beach (which is the only reason one should stay at the Excelsior). We chose the Hilton, which is 5 star, but cheaper than the Excelsior. So basically we felt cheated well before our vacation had even begun. The hotel tried to make up for our inconvenience by offering a beach cabana at 35 euros per day, and 20% of f&b. But honestly, it just didn't make a difference!
During our stay we only dealt with rude and non service minded people. It almost felt as if they hated working there. Our rooms were not connected. We were told that the connecting rooms were reserved for special guests - guests who return to the hotel year after year (who would do that??). Incredible! So again, we were made aware that there were much more important guests than us...
Rooms and food at the Excelsior is not 5 star standard either. Even though the hotel just had a make-over it is still extremely outdated and worn. Food is better at local restaurants.
The swimming pool is cold as ice, and your kids feel like they are in the way of swim teachers giving swim lessons to local kids.
When we left the hotel, I unfortunately left two gold necklaces on the desk in our room. I called as soon as we got of the boat at the Hilton (about 45 minutes later) and was told by the front desk that they had no time to go look, but they were sure that housekeeping would turn them in. Call me naive, but I have left things before, and they have always been returned to me. As I hadn't heard back after a few hours, I called the hotel. I was told that housekeeping did not find anything, and that it was not their responsibility anyways. I asked to speak to the manager, but he basically said the same. He trusted what housekeeping had told him, and he would call me if anything changed... Haven't heard back...
Please trust me when I tell you to NOT stay at the Excelsior. You will be so disappointed if you do! Even aside from all that happened to us, price and standard does NOT match. There are many other good hotels in Venice. If you can get a good deal at the Hilton, stay there. It is not a 5 star experience, but at least service is good.
